Pick Thickness

Hi All!

I have been playing for almost a year now, not as frequently as I like, and every time I see the subject of pick thickness come up in videos or in forums I get self-conscious about the picks I am using. It seems to be recommended to use much thicker picks than I like. I am currently most comfortable using .46mm. Every time I try to use something thicker, it doesn’t feel or sound as good, yet everywhere I look people recommend .7mm/.8mm and even thicker. So, my question is, am I maybe doing something wrong that makes the thicker picks not work as well for me, or is this something, as a beginner, I should build up to using a thicker pick? Are thicker picks preferred for certain styles of playing? I tend to stick to strumming only when I use my pick. Any suggestions and advice about pick choices and why a thicker pick tends to be preferable would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
