Old Folkcraft kit

I am building a dulcimer from an old Folkcraft kit. This is my third kit to put together and I’ve never built from a Folkcraft kit. Anyway, the top is curious to me...it’s two piece and it’s supposed to be nailed (with tiny nails) to the fret board underneath (which is hollowed out.) Is this a technique that any other builders currently use...two piece top that is nailed and not glued to the fret board? How does that hold up over time? I haven’t done it yet...I’m curious about the long term structural integrity.
