RED WING - Ed Thomas Replica - Jean Ritchie Quill Style
I've been playing around with the style of quill strumming that Jean Ritchie used and describes in "The Dulcimer Book" - where the quill is cut and held like a quill pen. I have found it quite a tricky technique to use but it does give a unique sound, and one quite different from the tone and rhythm style of the "Virginian" way of cutting and holding a quill.
I learnt a new (old!) tune last night that I had been listening to on I.D Stamper's album - the title track Red Wing. And I've put that together with Jean Ritchie's strumming style on my Ed Thomas replica. It is tuned to Bim-Bim-Bom (as Jean Rithcie's father would tune )and I think I've ended up somewherepretty close toDAA.
