fret installation on older just intonation dulcimer

Hello builders.

   I am getting ready to build a copy of the old noter style dulcimer with frets only under melody string. It will be Just Intonation. I was thinking of using short pieces of fret wire bent into a U shape and trimming the back of it flush on the legs, then drilling snug holes for the legs to fit in. 

  Does anyone have any other suggestions?
