A couple of months ago, I pre-ordered a copy of Phyllis Gaskins' new book "Galax Dulcimer: A Job of Journey Work". I received the book in the mail today and I can't wait to spend some time with it. In the meantime, here's a brief preview for others interested in traditional dulcimer styles. Some of the highlights of the book are:

My First Melton Dulcimer My Aha Moment Connecting the Hummel and the Old Galax Dulcimers The Galax Fiddler's Convention, the Melton Family, and Virginia Dulcimers Galax Dulcimer Body Design and Construction Playing the Galax Dulcimer Playing D Tunes on the Galax Dulcimer Playing G Tunes on the Galax Dulcimer Playing A/A Modal tunes on the Galax Dulcimer Playing Two-Key tunes on the Galax Dulcimer Roscoe Russell Galax Dulcimer and Keith Young Early Virginia Model Ben Seymour as Galax Builder An Interview with Don Neuhauser Terry Burcham's jacob Melton Dulcimer Raymond V. Melkton patterned Galax Dulcimers by Bowlens and Gaskins Recordings by Phyllis Gaskins And the usual Dedication and Acknowledgements

As you can see, there's a little something for everyone from dulcimer historian, to dulcimer builder, to dulcimer player. The book includes a CD, which includes slow and up-tempo versions of the songs presented. This is a must have for the traditional noter-drone dulcimer player, the dulcimer historian, and Galax dulcimer builders. The book can be obtained at:

The disclaimer: I have no financial interest in this book, but Phyllis is one of my favorite traditional dulcimer players. I'd love to see the book sell thousands of copies.
