Choice of Wood for Fingerboard?

Hello craftsmen of FOTMD! I was hoping for some opinions on if the choice of wood for the fingerboard affects tone very much. If so what woods do you prefer for their tone? I don't really think of the fingerboard as contributing very much to the sound, but it occurred to me that if the vibrations are passing through the fingerboard to the soundboard, maybe different woods transmit those vibrations to the soundboard differently. I almost always use red oak for my fingerboards just cause my local hardware store sells it at a good price and the 1x2s they have are always straight as an arrow. I keep wondering if a softer wood like maybe poplar might produce a different, more mellow tone.
