I'm extending a side thread that started on the previous discussion (Dulcimer Numero Uno) about dulcimer weights. General opinion is that they should weigh between 1 and 2 lbs. So,get out your kitchen scales and weigh 'em up and report here. We'll see who has the heaviest and who has the lightest.

Please include the following info:

  • Shape (Teardrop, hourglass, galax or other)
  • Who made it (if not you)
  • Type wood(s)
  • Type head (scroll or flat)
  • VSL
  • depth
  • Weight

I weighed mine and and here is what I came up with:

  • Hourglass McSpadden (kit) dulci out of walnut, flat head, 28.5" VSL, 1.5" deep, that weighs 2 lb, 7 oz;
  • Teardrop Folkcraft out of Cherry and Padoak, scroll head, 27" VSL, 2" deep that is 2 lbs 8 oz;
  • A homebrew baritone teardrop out of purple heart and maple, scroll head, 28' VSL, 2.75" deep that weighs 4 lbs even.
  • A homebrew cedar shorty with flat head, 20.25" VSL, 2" deep that is 2 lbs even
  • A homebrew bokote shorty with flat head, 20.5" VSL, 2' deep that is 2 lbs 9 oz., and
  • A home brew CBD out of cedar Padrone boxes, flat head, 20.25 VSL, 2" deep that weighs in at 3 lb, 4 oz.
