Newbe with a ?

I have never played a dulcimer or anything with strings on it. I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but here it goes.

since I have never played a dulcimer before, would it be best to learn to play a strumstick first then move up to a dulcimer latter on? Is a strumstick easier to play than a dulcimer?
