Help With Overwhelming Bass Strings

Hi To All

I have two dulcimers both tuned to DAA, when I play them, the bass stringoverwhelms the sound of the melody strings. Is this normal? The strings are.012 .012 .012 .022 on one and .011 .011 .013 .024 on the other one.
