What unusual woods have you tried?

There are several species I prefer to use and i can usually have predictable results each time I work with them. Every now and then I come across something I think should work - sometimes it does! Douglas fir has worked very well for back braces but was disappointing as a soundboard wood, at least it was when used on a dulcimer of my design. Quarter sawn sassafras, when I can get it, makes a wonderfu soundboard!
