In giving a workshop for beginners I found three gimmicks that I would like to mention.                              I: For the dulcimers that don't have cases, I use cases from folding chairs.                                                  2:I number the frets for beginners using little white stickers that you might use at a tag sale. I think of the numbers as "training wheels". The stickers give beginners confidence, especially when we dive into duets.  3:Lastly, I have found that using some easily removable artist's drafting tape is a way for the students to keep their picks with the instrument when they are first beginning.
