Since I joined I've made about 200 dulcimers, using tins for sound boxes, tambourines for a banjo style, tear drop and ovoids, trapezoids and recently rectangular Tennessee music box style. Real timber is just too expensive so I use good quality ply for the tops and bottoms - Do me I'm no obsessive traditionalist except in music itself. I have experimented with tuning specifics and VSL and ratio to instrument size, in High D, middle D, baritone and bass D. My wife sings mostly in G now so I've concentrated on G instruments to accompany her Autoharp.
You would be surprised just how much music theory I've acquired in this latest hobby - not least since I'm an obsessive maniac; one is never enough and knowledge of the theory behind it is never enough - even so when it comes to playing I still depend on "if it sound right it must be right. If it sounds right only to me then it's still perfect.
If its doable I'll try it.
I play daily and thank the world around me that I've discovered dulcimers.
I've attached a few of the very latest and hope I do not offend mountain dulcimer traditionalist - as well as the instrument and its tradition it's the music that counts.
Hi Dieter, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. It's a good place to come, spend some time, learn about the dulcimer, and to meet some good people.
Gudaee,
Thank you very much for your kind welcome.
