Miriam - you can still build in a two-room flat. All you need is a table to work on. You can buy wood already sawn down to 1/8" thin, pre-made tuning heads that you can can modify and pre-slotted fretboards.... I've built a couple living aboard a 26 ft sailboat!
It's cool to build instruments, I wish I could do as well. But even when I could I wouln't have the place for the equipment, just live in a small 2 room flat.
