Oh thank-you! She sure can be a handful though! I forgot what it was like having a toddler at home!

We just got a new puppy a couple of weeks ago too! This is Roxy. She's a boxer/lab, born October 10. She's pretty much house-trained as long as we take her out every couple of hours. She knows how to sit, shake a paw,lay down, retrieve, and walks really good on the leash.

Skip, my sister sent me a Snark SN-2 chromatic tuner a couple months back, haven't tried it out yet, going to put that on her today and see what happens. Been using the Pro Guitar Tuner app on my phone, and have the phone sitting on the dulcimer next to the melody string close to where you strum it, so maybe that's screwing up the reading

Thanks Ken, I'll tune it DAA then! Warren's response was "it is a traditional tempered scale"

Thanks Skip. I did what you said, and checked the tuning at the first fret on my old dulcimer- still waiting for the Warren May to get here. The bass D3 was bang on, as was the middle A3, but the melody d4 was flatter than it should have been, if that makes any sense...

I am Robin, but I messaged him and am waiting on a reply. He did say that that one was better in DAA tuning, so I'm thinking that one probably is Just Intonation. But now I'm wondering about my old girl I got a few months back that I'm still not sure who made, that I've been chording on in DAd...

How can you tell if an old dulcimer, all diatonic was set up for just intonation or not?

Ukulele Tuners

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Well I bought some banjo friction tuners for her on ebay off a 1920's banjo out of New Jersey. 3 out of 4 good ones plus some parts, and only short one good washer. The person who sold them to me thought they were probably Grovers. Got them fitted and got her strung up and tuned. Looks like I'll have to make another nut and bridge up, as the slots are cut too wide for the melody and middle strings, so the strings are buzzing, but otherwise she sounds nice...

Who made this dulcimer?

Hi Robin, I think you have a good point. The ones I made I worked on for a long time and they looked a lot rougher than this one. Nice uniform little blocks inside too glued from the top and bottom to the sides. Hard to get a good picture, but there's lots of them, and they all look the same.

Me too Robin! The person who sold it to me didn't have any idea how old it was, where it was from or who made it

Hi Robin, no sign of any markings under that metal piece or on the tail. I had a good look at it before I put that fender strap button on.I think that metal piece must be copper, it isn't magnetic, but it sure is heavy

I ordered some cool tuners for her from Trenton, NJ, off a 1920's banjo. 3 good ones in there. Still not sure what make they are. Any ideas?

Does anybody have any idea who may have made this dulcimer? It doesn't have any tag or anything on it. I bought it on ebay out of Alford, GB

Ukulele Tuners

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking of sanding the old pegs a little bit at a time to see if I could get them to fit properly. Maybe I should try that first.
I was also thinking of something like Grover Champion friction tuners if I did buy some, maybe they would look better.
I have no idea who made this dulcimer or where it was made, I wish I did. I bought it on ebay out of Alford, Great Britain. There are no markings on it as to who made it, and the top and bottom are made of plywood.

Will Grover 8N geared Ukulele tuners work alright on a Dulcimer, before I go ahead and order any? I want to put them on that dulcimer I just bought, it has these infernal violin tuning pegs that are all seized, probably because they don't fit properly, they aren't ebony, and it's been really humid. Got 2 out of 3 out, but it took several days and a lot of patience with what I have to work with...

Tips on shipping dulcimers

FOR SALE:instruments/music items/CDs/Wanted to Buy...

Being a sewing machine mechanic I am also into antique Singers. Last year I bought a 1918 Singer 127 shuttle-bobbin sewing machine on E-bay and had it shipped Canada Post from Charlottetown, PEI to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Despite having sent the seller links to proper packing instructions and asking him to heavily insure the machine at my cost, Canada Post somehow managed to put something through the top of the carton. Thankfully the machine was in a vintage portable case that saved the old girl. The case however was damaged beyond repair, and although I argued with Canada Post up and down that it was irreplaceable, the seller had apparently put the minimum insurance on it.
To make matters worse they would only deal with the seller and not me, and would only pay the insurance out to him, although the machine was mine, and I had paid the shipping and insurance. Also They refused to tell me the amount of the settlement which they paid out to him. I had to wait for the seller to pay the insurance out to me, the amount which I had to trust was correct as I was never shown a receipt of the settlement.
In the end I did get enough to buy a beautiful old treadle cabinet for her.
The reason I mention this is because I have a machine in upstate New York I need to get home, and Treadleon, a sewing machine group I'm a member of on Yahoo groups does what's called "Pony Express"- people belonging to the group arrange to move each others sewing machines back and forth across USA and Canada at no cost and with much more care!
