Joanna, I believe you have a dulcimer that was copied from a C.N.Prichard Dulcimer. Or perhaps one made buy his brother John. Also it is said that his father in law possibly made dulcimers. I make a reproduction of the Prichard dulcimer, which you can see on my page here. This dulcimer was definitly influenced by the Prichard dulcimer,as it so closely resembles it. I would be interested to see what research will turn up about this dulcimer. I would love to be able to look at this dulcimer up close. There are even more to be seen or not seen on the inside of a dulcimer as there is outside. I live in Bruceton Mills ,WV and would love to have the chance to inspect this instrument. Thanks for sharing, Kevin Messenger.

Tips on shipping dulcimers

FOR SALE:instruments/music items/CDs/Wanted to Buy...

I have shipped many instruments here and abroad with out a single problem. I build cradles within the box to support the instrument, and add lots of buffer padding all around. It has worked great so far. By the way , what has become of the damaged instruments. I build and might would be interested in repairing or maybe purchasing.

Funky Dulcimer

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Raven it appears to have a radiused fretboard, and the bridge seems arched as well. I think you might be right about it beung a bowed dulcimer. You might want to see what Robim Thompson thinks she plays a bowed dulci.

Kim, the bridge and nut are a critical part of how you dulcimer will play and sound. They need to be cut and adjusted properly. If you would send me dementions, I could make you blanks that would fit ,but they would still need to be cut for the string set up and hieght adjusted.

How to restore old dulcimer?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Bill, try moving your bridge back about 1 1/2 ' and check it again. See what the distance is from the nut to the 7th fret, and double that measurement that is where your bridge should be to start.
