OH NO It's already started.LOL That's the thing about dulcimers, once you got one, you start lookiing for another, and another and another and another.......A friend of mine has a Ron Gibson and loves it. I've never played one so I don't know about the action but his sound good. Warren May make a pretty and a great sounding dulcimer, Modern mountain there are a lot out there. Well a few less since I started collecting.

This is very good advice! Wait before you invite. Jam with them a while first.

Strumelia said:

I have a bit of advice if you want it- start just by having a weekly or monthly jam. Get to know the people who come and see what they do. I'm imagining you'd be welcoming most folks with acoustic instruments, right? Well, unless you are actually wanting to form a band that contains everyone who comes to the jam (and maybe you DO want that), I suggest you hold off talking about forming a band to the general jam group... You may find that you don't blend well musically (or personally) with everyone who comes to the jam, and it's far easier, with less bruised egos, to invite a few people later on privately in terms of forming a band rather than to tell the whole jam group from the start that you are wanting to form a band. I guess a lot also depends on how big or small you want your band to be.

Good luck and have fun!

YARD SALE FIND!!!!

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

The woman I bought it from has several instruments she plays but the whistles and concertinaare her passion. She had,had this dulclimer custom made for her by Allen Wood but she said she didn't play it very often. You can tell it hadn't been it is in fantastic condition. I told her about KMW and some of the other festivals and she is excited about maybe coming to some of them. I hope she does.

LOL I'm pretty good at fiddlin around just don't know about with a jimbow.

@ Sam, Sam I do love making new friends, my husband says I never meet an enemy. Once a friend of mine years ago that was German and her mother was still in Germany. He mom was going to visit, so when she got here a lot of us got together, I said Hi to her and started talking to her, she would nod her head and say Ya Ya , I thought she was agreeing with everything I had to say LOL. soon a crowd was gathering around us and I saw a lot of snickers and giggles . In a few her daughter Linda came up to me and said Dana Mom doesn't speak a word of English . I was flabbergasted , I said well we were having a heck of a conversation !Needless to say we got along great I did all the talking and she did all the listening HAHA I took her for a ride in my little green dunebuggy and she had a ball, we understood each other on a different level, we enjoyed laughing and having fun .

That's a great story Ben

Benjamin W Barr Jr said:

Definitely a keeper and a heck of a find. It's sort of how I got my first dulcimer. I stopped at a flea market and this dulcimer was sitting on a table and the wind was actually making music on the strings. I had never seen nor heard of one at the time. The fellow selling it gave me a brief rundown of how he came on it and asked if $30 was a fair price...he said he had bought it for $20. I replied for someone who knows the instrument it probably is. I then started to walk away and he asked if I had $25 for it. I thought for a couple of seconds and figured that if I didn't like it, I could probably get my money back from selling it. Well, I still have that dulcimer!

YARD SALE FIND!!!!

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Look what I found at a yard sale in Lexington yesterday. I saw a post for a yardsale and it said there was a dulcimer. I emailed the lady and ask about it and she told me to come by and I could look at it before theyard sale started, so off I went. She brought the case out and opened it up and out came a beautiful tear drop dulcimer. And it sounds beautiful. and Mandy it came with a Jimbow:) Here are some pics of it. It has night hawks, moons and I think yucca plants. It was made by Allen Woods, I looked up his site but couldn't get anything. Well here it is. And it only cost 100 dollars. The bag that came with it is prob 35 dollars make the dulcimer even cheaper.:)

Redneck tour bus

OFF TOPIC discussions

Well the bus is getting ready to leave the station on another trip.

The group minus me and dad are heading up to Mt Sterling just 15mins up the road to eat at Lee's famous recipe and then to the Hee Haw Review. Dang and I'm missing it!LOL

OH well right now I'm watching dad on the vid monitor eating a plate of fresh pinapple(his and my favorite fruit)I just cut up for him.

Carter his little dog has gotten wise to me and when the door opens he jump down and under the bed where I can't get him to put him out.I just watched as he stole a piece of pineapple off dad's plate and back under the bed. Now that I'm out and back in the livingroom the little thief jumped back up on the bed and nosed his way under the covers. Dad loves that little dog to death and I think it goes the other way to.

Well the bus is pulling out, dad is loving on Carter and I get some down time. Hee Haw!

I did take a chance one time one a young guy that built one for his self and then sold it to buy another instrument. It was a 6 string and I wanted one. I got it for just 120 dollars and it played and sounded great. But it could have just as easily been a dud. I usually don't buy from anyone that says no returns. I don't spend real big money on a dulcimer I can't see or play.

Well Barbara, I lucky in that I live really close to Warren Mays shop and I own 3 of his dulcimers. I go to festivals, where I bought my Papaws dulcimer and my Modern Mountain. I bought my banjammer from Clemmer so I knew it would sound good. My Homer Ledfords I bought all three off the internet but Homer made wonderful instruments so I knew I couldn't go wrong. I have only bought one through ebay that was total JUNK and I sent it back to the seller telling them so. They totally misrepresented it on purpose to which made it even worse. They relisted it still saying what a wonderful, great sounding instrument it was. LOL It couldn't even be tuned because of the way it was made. I just have learned what to look for in a dulcimer and I don't buy from builders that I don't know without playing them first. I know most of the builders that I have dulcimers from.

Well I say there like Lays potato chips, no one can have just one. Or at least I can't have just one. I am addictied to collecting dulcimer. I have 13 at the moment, and most of them are tuned dad. I don't have a prop. retuning as I play. Oh 2 are baritones and are tuned AEA and one of those is the one I play more than any here at home. When I play with the group I play one of the others. I have 3 Homer Ledfords that are the pride of my collection and if I find another for the right price it will join them. I have dulcimers hung up all over my walls. I just love them and can't help my self. But I have found out over the time is not to buy because they are pretty, buy them for there voice. Sometimes the ugliest dulcimer can sing the prettiest.

Your right Ken everyone thinks there child(dulcimer) is the most beautiful to look at and listen to.Singing there praises to High Heaven.(like me) You really have to get out there and try some for yourself to see what you like. Touch and feel them and listen to them yourself to get a idea of what you want. You can listen to someone sing the praises of a builder all day long but it might not sound that good to your ear. Each person has his own preferences and hands on is the best way to chose what is best for you.

I got on here singing the praises of my kids(dulcimers) LOL when to some they might be or sound ugly as(Homemade sin) as my mamaw used to say.
