Hi, Everybody.
I have a repair job of replacing two frets, adding two frets, and adjusting the action. I just don’t know how much to charge for the repairs. Any suggestions for what I should charge for the work?
Thank you, Matt! That’s a good thing to know. This isn’t the first time this has happened. Last time, I just started a whole new fret board with the intention of fixing the one that I messed up.
Cyano acrylate (super glue) is a luthier's best friend. Put down some tape around the fret slot, CAREFULLY put a small amount across the slot, press in the fret and weigh down appropriately. In this case, clamps would be messy. Stewmac sells containers of cyano with very narrow tips for just such purposes.
Hi, Folks. I have a question. One of my fret slots is just a hair wider than the rest, and my 6.5 fret won’t stay in place. What do other luthiers do in this situation?
Can any of you offer suggestions or recommendations for hanging dulcimers on a wall? I’ve seen dulcimer hooks online that are quite simple, but priced at $12 and up! I would appreciate your suggestions and ideas.
Thanks, John. I’ll give that a try, maybe with a hand planer or sander.
My two weenie girls, Emmy and Cricket, and my Granddaughter, Ariana, with my one-eyed demon weenie, Daisy, who now lives with Ariana because Daisy likes her best.
What is the best method of removing a fretboard from a dulcimer? I built a dulcimer years ago that I thought was firewood because the fretboard was warped. A friend suggested I remove the fretboard, make a new one and put another top on the dulcimer if it gets damaged in the process. Any suggestions?
Hi, Ken. The spot is about 1/4” in diameter. It’s grease from melted cheese. I sanded most of it out. I plan on using tung oil to finish.
How big is the speck?
What kind of 'kitchen grease" (bacon fat, vegetable oil, butter or margarine, etc)?
How do you intend to finish the fretboard when you're done -- varnish, tung oil, urethane, boiled linseed oil, etc??
I have a question for you builders. I’m building a dulcimer on my kitchen table and a speck of grease splashed onto my fret board. Is there any way to get a greasy spot off of walnut?

Do any of you have dulcimer tablature for "Wayfaring Stranger?" I can't find it anywhere and want to learn it. If I knew it well enough, I could probably figure it out, but I don't remember all of the melody. If you do have it, would you be able to scan it & e-mail it to me? My e-mail address is molly@dulcimersbymolly.com. Thanks!
My granddaughter dropped a steel ball on the back of my favorite dulcimer and put a big crack in it. Is there any way to repair a crack? It's along the wood grain, and barely noticeable to the eye, but I'm afraid it'll crack even more if I don't do something about it. Any suggestions?
