Are there luthiers who will build with your wood?
Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions
Thanks everyone. My new dulcimer is coming down as I type. I have mixed feelings about it, but having the new dulcimer made will allow it to sing in the years to come.

Thanks for the insights. We live near Amish country and many families run sawmills, so we would be able to get that part done, too. The tree is easily that big around, probably closer to four feet diameter.

We have a black walnut tree that has to come down, and I'd like to have a dulcimer made with some of the wood. So...are there builders I the US who might do this? I 'd like to find out how to prepare the wood properly, and if the tree cutters need any specific instructions? Thanks.

Thanks Gary, I hadn't seen that one before. It would be nice for when I practice at home, too.

Dulcimer and yoga practice?
General mountain dulcimer or music discussions
This is one of those off the wall questions. At the yoga studio where I practice, there have been some special workshops offered. A couple who leads yoga practice while the husband plays his cello to enhance the moves. One with a guitar. I spotted a studio in North Carolina that offers something like this with the mountain dulcimer. I'm curious if anyone here has ever done something like this with their dulcimer or their own yoga practice?

How Many
General mountain dulcimer or music discussions
I have three....the one my husband got me for Christmas ages ago, a small travel one and my "good" one. Plus lots of other non-dulcimer instruments populating our home.

How to welcome a new jammer
General mountain dulcimer or music discussions
I haven't joined any jams for some of the reasons that have been shared here. Plus, I don't know of any local dulcimer groups. If there are any, they have a secret password or something. A couple places in my area have Irish sessions and there's an old time group, but I need to just go listen and see what I think. My husband took up banjo (but put it down about a year ago due to schedule overload) and I've thought it would be fun to try to play together. He hasn't had the same enthusiasm. Playing a musical instrument is something he never, ever did until he took it up about five years ago, so he just doesn't feel comfortable with the notion.
I'm sorry to hear Thanna ran into that kind of attitude. When I had my short lived time with the gospel group at church, they were sort of that way, too. In fact, though I was "the answer to a prayer," somehow I wasn't informed of the practice schedule after our break. I actually confronted the group leader on that, telling her I was okay with that, but had I been a new member of the congregation, that would have been very uncool. She apologized but I think she had her own agenda the whole time. People are funny, aren't they?

Her website still has supplies and things to go with the dulcimers, but she's no longer building them. It's an absolutely beautiful instrument, too.

I have two other dulcimers, but this is the one I play, made by Kerry Anderson, who sadly is not making instruments anymore as far as I know. This was one she had already made that I really liked, and the savings from having a custom design were nice, too!
