Bonnie and Clyde and the "dulcimore"

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

The one big thing Bonnie and Clyde had a talent for was breaking the law and it caught up with them. Maybe they were the inspiration for "I Fought the Law and the Law Won",

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I would like to see more workshops and music books with noter drone and no half frets. I like that old time style.

Beginner? Intermediate? Expert?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Having descriptions for workshop classes is helpful especially if classes that you want to take are at the same time. It helps with making decisions. When I attended Shenandoah U. I took the beginner classes. I did know some of the basics already but it doesn't hurt to review them. I agree Rob!!! Anne Lough encouraged me to challenge myself and take a class that is above my level. I had trouble with some elements but I learned a lot and enjoyed it. As always, I'm learning a lot from members here. Thank you John Keane and Robin Clark for your how to videos! I guess I'll always be a beginner for some aspect of the MD. It is such a versatile instrument. Thank you Lisa for this web site. It's the best!!! Wayne, I didn't realize you no longer have pennies. When you come to my neck of the woods I'll give you some, LOL,

Have you met other FOTMD's in real life and become friends?

OFF TOPIC discussions

Last spring I went to a dulcimer festival/workshop at Shenandoah University and met Ken Longfield and Susan. We had a blast. I met Maddie MacNeil, Ralph Lee Smith, Ann Lough and Rob Brereton. I hope this festival continues. I also had the opportunity to meet Jim and Bev Fawcett when they took vacation to visit Virginia. They are wonderful people. We spent time together touring Front Royal and we took pictures. I was the thorn between two roses, LOL. I was able to make it to the Wartz and All Gathering. I had the best time. I got to meet Rob Lackey, Liz, Scott Allen, Jim and Bev, Kevin Messenger and their families. They truly are the Friends of FOTMD. I got treated to a meal. Thanks Rob!!! We shared music, food and laughs. We had a great time. I'm looking forward to doing this again. I'm so glad I found this web site. Thank you Lisa for putting this all together!!!

Robin, If the Washington Nationals win Friday night, I don't know what I'll do. I'll either get excited that our area finally has a winning team (been a long dry spell; although, hockey team has been okay) or I'll faint from the shock of it all

Syd, before you give up on your dulcimer you may want to talk with those who have a teardrop. Sam has one and Wayne does too. They can give you some advice. I had trouble at first keeping my dulcimer positioned on my legs until I used a makeshift footstool to keep my legs level and I have an hourglass. Some people use pads underneath to keep the dulcimer from sliding. Carrie uses a strap that she brings below her legs. She uses pads too. I also had strap buttons installed on my dulcimer thanks to Ken . I haven't used a strap yet but plan to and soon as I get one made. I'm a newbie too but have learned a lot from the discussion posts and watching videos.

Now you have to send us the tab for it. Then we can all do a collaboration. The President of SpitValve Inc. will put it together in a video for us if we bribe him, LOL .

Seriously, that is a great song Dana and yes I would like to have the tab for it Better yet, I would love to see you sing this

RECIPES~Bile dem cabbage down, fry dat chicken up, ho-cakes, sow belly, squirrel heads n gravy ... got a recipe share it, need one, look for it here!

OFF TOPIC discussions

Okay, here is the recipe I use to make cast iron skillet corn bread. This works for a 10 inch cast iron skillet. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter for the skillet, 3/4 cup of cornmeal, 1 cup of all purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar (there's your hunks of sugar Sam ), 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, 2 eggs beaten and 2/3 cup of milk. Sift the dry ingredients together in a bowl then mix in the wet, milk and eggs. Put the 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in your cast iron skillet. Place the skillet in a 450 degree oven until hot and butter melted. Take the skillet out of the oven and pour batter in skillet. (The original recipe says to pour the melted butter into the batter and then pour the batter back in the skillet...it's up to you, I've done both but sometimes it's easier for me to leave the melted butter in the skillet and pour the batter in it). Return the skillet with the batter into the oven and bake for about 15 minutes or till it's golden brown. I like this cornbread hot with a little butter.

Sam, that Mexican Cornbread should be called West Virginia Mexican Cornbread. I've had a version of this before. My aunt makes it. Though I don't believe she had pepperoni just the sausage. She used bell peppers too. Sometimes the mild banana peppers are used. Those peppers are popular. Now, we just need a recipe for fried apples and biscuits..WV style

Well, I just watched the episode last night on the Inspiration Network. John Boy had his own dulcimer in the beginning. He said it was made by Mr. Dulcimer.

Dana, from the brief glimpse I saw of it I thought it might be a Ledford. Jenny bought John Boy "the best dulcimer made by Mr. Dulcimer" as a going away gift. It had a light color sound board with a dark color fret board. The shape reminded me more of a Prichard (I've got Kevin's Prichards on my mind ). Do you have any guesses as to who the makers are of those nice looking dulcimers? I couldn't see the credits.

We visited the Walton's Mountain Museum in Schuyler VA on Tuesday. I got a photo of a picture of John Boy playing that dulcimer. I will try to post it later. By the way, the Hamner home is not like the one depicted on tv. Also, Earl Hamner Sr. worked at the local soapstone quarry, cutting soapstone. The museum is small but has lots of memorabilia. All the cast members have visited that museum at least once. It was fun to visit. "Ike Godsey's" store is still there but modernized. It's more like a 7-11 and a small deli. Gas ain't cheap there.

Nicholas, here is a link to a portion of Ralp Lee Smith's book, Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions, in which he describes information on CN Prichard who made the Huntington WV dulcimers, http://books.google.com/books?id=AKQ6k9EwD-kC&lpg=PA57&ots=... . I have pictures of the census records Ralph mentions on my page.

That gelatin ended up in that blue and yellow can along with some solid stuff as yet to be identified. And you pick on me for not liking Spam?

That brings back memories Maryann ! In 1940's wartime UK meat was rationed, but not offal !,which was also cheap compared to 'proper meat'. My mother who had been a country girl in her youth, was a devotee of things such as tripe, chittlings, ect, and I well recollect the smell of pigs head (for brawn) and pigs trotters being cooked ,with the result,as you say, vast amounts of gelatine !!! I hate Pork pie for precisely that, ie, always a thickness of the stuff between the pie crust and the meat.
