The "I have small hands" idea

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Hey Lisa...out of curiosity I checked the measurement that you are talking about and mine is exactly the same as yours.  I had to stretch my hand a bit to make it to 8 inches.  I agree with the guys  however, persistence does pay off.  It took me almost a year to develop the muscle strength in my pinky to be able to use it successfully.  During that year however, I had to find creative ways to "cheat".  I would use the pinky as much as I could, but would have to finger some chords differently or use my ring finger.  After several months of doing this I started to use my pinky without thinking about it.  Gradually the length of "use" time became longer and longer.  Now it is not a problem at all and all of my hard work has improved my playing skills.  I have played dulcimers with a 23 to a 30 VSL.  I find that a 27 VSL suits me pretty well.  It is very important to find what works for YOU!  If I might make one suggestion,....whatever VSL you decide on, you may want to stick to that length.  I have been play the 27VSL for so long now, that my brain gets "confused" when I try to swap to another VSL.  LOL. The most important thing is to find what works for you!

Hail to the chief Dusty. I depend a lot on the VSL and how much I play the "non standard dulcimer." I don't have to look so much on the dulcimers I play every day, but for my Ginger, Bass, 26 VSL, etc..I have to "look" a whole lot more. I hope to eventually get more comfortable with those as well. When you are a beginner, you will have to look a lot before you are comfortable, but you will get to the point that you don't need to stare it down quiet as much. Be patient, it will take some time!

Beginner? Intermediate? Expert?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Labels, Shmabels. I don't like them. You can be many different kinds of players. Advanced at one skill and intermediate or beginning at another skill. You are what you think you are. If you think you're advanced, then you are, if you think that you're intermediate, then you are, if you think you're a beginner, then you are. The key words here are YOU THINK! I think that it's important to use your best judgement when choosing classes and skills that are best for you. I take classes that interest me regardless of the class description. Sometimes they are a bit too easy, but as Rob pointed out, these are always good to review fundamentals. Sometimes, they are too hard, but I have noticed that you always improve your playing, when you are around players that play better than you. If you pay attention, you can always learn something new at any level class. Sometimes, just the way someone says something different, will gets those brain dendrites circulating and make connections in a new direction. Anyway, that's my take on this discussion.

A lot of John's kids use gun cases for dulcimer cases. Might work!

The Power of Music

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Music is such a part of my life that is hard for me to imagine that people don't have access to music twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Music is indeed very powerful and allows us to express our inner soul, whether we are young or old, music makes us feel. It reminds us of moments in our life, helps us heal, and brings a smile to our faces. Thank you for posting this Phil, it reminded me of the true power of music and our responsibility to bring that joy to others on a daily basis.

Hey Jan, I didn't realize that was your Dulcimer debut! Dulcimerville 2012 was also my solo debut on playing the dulcimer for a live audience. (I don't count videos, since you can do several "takes" Hee Hee). At the time, I had been playing for a year and a half and was very nervous all week long, but I survived. I am looking forward to performing again in the near future. I have played flute for almost 40 years and never remembered having such stage fright.

I'm a flute player. Dulcimer is my first attempt at a string instrument. I wanted to try something new and fun.
