There was a discussion on sound holes & the weeping hearts or crying hearts awhile back.

kin-h. says, "A bleeding heart, is someone who is considered too sentimental or liberal in dealing with social situations"

Or, "could be the shape of the Linden leaf"

Or, saddness or lost

I hear the trailing hearts has become a beloved design with the mountain dulcimers.

Marg,

Yes, Dad made this dulcimer :) I really don't know why he chose the weeping hearts - is there a significance/meaning to using them?

Is the photo the dulcimer your dad made, it's very nice. Do you know why he made the choice of the weeping hearts as the sound holes? I'm asking because, I have a fiddle side dulcimer make by Sam Carroll with the weeping hearts and also wonder why he made this choice.

Welcome to this site & enjoy your dulcimer adventure

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm so glad to be getting back into my music again - life has been in a state of upheaval for a while, but appears to be settling down, or at least settled down enough that I can pick up the instruments :)
