Can anyone provide me with some advise on finishing. I am presently building a Folkcraft Mountain Dulcimer fram a kit. I am pleasantly pleased with the results, I choose to use Tru-Oil Gunstock Finish by Birchwood Casey. My questions are (1) do I finish the fretboard or leave it unfinished (2) on my next build (which I already have aMcSpadden Kit from the Dulcimer Shoppe) it is proper or benefical to finish the inside of the instrument? Thanks in advance for any input or recommendations.

Mike, if you want to get a response from other builders you need to create a thread in the Dulcimer Making group. If you have joined the group you should see a + sign in the upper right hand corner. Click on it and it should open a box where you create the thread.

Putting a finish on a mountain dulcimer is a personal choice, so I am sure you will get many answers. When I first started building I learned from a violin maker and used violin varnish on my dulcimers. Later I switched to rattle can spray lacquer. I've also used shellac, paint, and tung oil finishes on dulcimers. I've never used Tru-Oil on a dulcimer, but I have used it on guitar necks. Whatever you use, you do not want the finish to be too heavy or thick. As to finishing the fret board surface, it depends on the wood used. I wouldn't put a finish on ebony or rosewood. I do put finish on walnut, poplar, maple, and cherry fret boards. Generally it is the same finish as on the body of the dulcimer.
