So many dulcimer festivals in the fall nowadays! Great for players and instructors, but not so much for long established festivals like the North Georgia Foothills Dulcimer Association's 31st Nov. 21-24 Fall Festival at Unicoi State Park Lodge in Helen GA. At its height, it had gone from twenty some people at the beginning to over 250 people. A limit had to be set for members only. Then as the competition from other festivals and workshops began to grow, the festival opened back up four or five years ago. Evaluations continued to rate the festival highly, but numbers have fallen off steadily, so much so that the organization has operated with a deficit for several years. It is completely run by volunteers. Only the faculty and audio-visual man get paid as well as the Lodge. Many people have told me this year's faculty and classes look great, but the number of registrants is at a low that will give NGFDA its biggest deficit this year.
One complaint is the expense of staying and eating at the Lodge. Enough time, though, is given for the lunch and dinner breaks that people can go into "Alpine" Helen, where there is cheaper lodging and many places to eat, just outside the State Park.
Don't miss out on the wonderful workshops, jamming (so many places to jam), vendors, contra dance, swap table, and great camaraderie. (I've been told many times it feels like a good family.) Go to ngfda.com and scroll down the home page for more information and instructions on registering, and, of course, registering itself.
Please help NGFDA keep the North Georgia tradition alive.
