Hi Songcatcher, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. It's a good place to come, spend some time, learn about the dulcimer, and to meet some good people.
Obviously, the dulcimer that you have (along with the gauge of strings) makes that particular dulcimer sound best in the DAA tuning and I wouldn't change it. Another dulcimer and gauge of strings could be better in other tunings such as DAD, but that would require an additional purchase. I have several and that is what I often do: a different dulcimer for different tunings/songs.
Welcome Songcatcher to Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. Glad you joined. This is a wonderful group which loves to share and encourage one another. Best wishes on your dulcimer journey.
Thank you guys for the welcome. I play in Daa only and have trouble finding other Daa players. Have tried other tunings but the Daa fingering and sound on my dulcimer are more pleasant to me than the other tunings. It sounds terrible in Dad (which is the most popular tuning) so I've just always stuck with Daa. I handpick, chord and do noter as well. Looking forward to picking up some tips here.
Welcome to FOTMD, Songcatcher. It is good to have you aboard. I look forward to your participation in these discussions. Let us know if we can help you in any way along your dulcimer journey.
In DAA you can play with DAd players, I'm pretty sure
