fretboard wood

I am working on my third dulcimer right now. I wanted to make this one all from American Elm with a bone or antler nut and bridge, but I'm wondering if the Elm is going to be hard enough to use for a fretboard. I am thinking of using several coats of spray varnish on it when it is finished.
