Beginner Instrument?

Hi all..

I am starting the methodical process of shopping for a dulcimer. I am leary of the quality of the commercial instruments that I can find on eBay and on Amazon. I want to find a good, reasonably priced one from a small shop. maker. Suggestions?

Also 3 or 4 strings for a beginning player, that's hacked on other instruments?
