So the colonials stole a European freted zither and made a mountain dulcimer, then played a load of old tunes from the Brittish Isles on it changing them as they went along. Now the Brits have stolen that instrument from the colonials and smuggled it back to Europe to play old English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh tunes on it in their original form
