Paul R.,Having done lots of 'setup tweaking' on both my bicycles and my banjos, it never ceases to amaze me how many similarities I find between fine tuning bikes and banjos. It's rather uncanny. I love tweaking the setup on my banjos!When i first started playing clawhammer banjo, I had banjo fever and felt I needed a banjo for every 'banjo sound' I wanted to produce. I wound up with about 13 banjos, but most of them simply gathered dust and several were unfortunate impulse buys. I Ebayed a few to get rid of the clutter, and now I have 7, one of which I still plan to sell too. My remaining 6 include 1 antique and 5 good playable 'work horses'. Two of those five are fretless. The 5 are played fairly regularly and I think I'll never need to buy any other banjos. I could actually make do with 3 or so, but since I have the 5 good ones I will keep playing them.My point here is that I used to think I needed a certain specific banjo for every distinct sound I was after. Now I've gotten way more laid back and these days I kinda feel like any banjo I grab off the wall will do just fine in any situation. As long as the banjo is set up well and plays smoothly, I'm no longer quite so picky about getting an exact certain 'sound'...now I tend to just say "hey, it's a banjo!" and it is what it is. At least all banjos sound like banjos, and they almost all sound good to me. LOL

That was one of the things that prompted me to go back to the banjo (as I already could play a little fingerstyle on it) and finally work on getting the frailing going!.

That's so true that learning a second instrument, or a third, actually helps us with all our instruments.I just LOVE tinkering with my banjos! The banjo is the absolute best instrument for tweaking all the mechanical parts on it. TOO FUN!!Great that you took off your resonator and loosened the tailpiece a bit. Try loosening the head just a little bit all around too....like a 1/4 turn per bracket. If it doesn't sound good then put it back again. I find the best sound is when loosening the tailpiece all the way and then tightening it just only enough until it grabs a little....no more. Gives a nice soft bell tone.

Well you should know that many of the very best old clawhammer banjo frailers use/used resonator banjos.By the way, I have frailing scoops on my banjos, but i have migrated to playing even higher up the neck than the scoops, so they don't do anything for me anyway. ;)The banjo you have is likely just fine for clawhammering....just don't use metal bluegrass picks.

Foggers, that's great!Dwight Diller was my original banjo teacher about 11 years ago- I took a 3 day workshop of his when i was just starting out.I love his approach to clawhammer banjo- nothing fancy, but heavy on good rhythm. Dwight used to say "The right hand is the meat and potatoes, everything else is gravy."...I love that! ;DWhenever I feel that the banjo world is too frustrating and fussy, I just go back to the basic 'meat and potatoes' of Dwight's philosophy. you couldn't have picked a better learning instructor, in my opinion. Hi Jane,I have never seen Dwight's DVD's, but I took a weekend workshop with him when i was just starting out.He mainly emphasizes rhythm which is good. I like the West Virginia tunes he specializes in , and his recordings are such a pleasure to listen to- nice easy pace and clear to hear what he is doing- never fancy or fussy. I love how he plays, and I have several of his great music cd's, such as "Just Banjo" and Banjo '99, or some such titles.

Hi Foggers,I play clawhammer banjo. I was lucky enough to have a decent teacher to get me started- Dwight Diller.I highly recommend his DVD's and recordings.Frankly, because I had a live teacher and banjo playing friends to help me, I don't know a lot about visual aides for learning the clawhammer stroke.But...have you checked out some of Pat Costello's online instruction? He has a lot of clips for beginners I believe. Check some here: Pat's clips I don't agree with some of his banjo philosophies, but perhaps his basic stroke instruction can help you if you have not seen it already.

You are all most welcome. :)I too am delighted and amazed at how much people seem to like the place.I was kind of lucky in that these past two weeks I coincidentally did not have a lot of patent invention illustration jobs piled on my desk for a change (my actual 'day job'...yes I do actually have a real JOB!). So I was able to take the time for the most time consuming/tweaking part of getting FOTMD set up. My wonderful Brian was very understanding as I took this time off of our regular work. Now it seems to only need modest changing and adjusting here and there, for ongoing growth/maintenance.I am so very gratified to see how happy folks are with it so far- believe me, that makes every moment spent well worthwhile. Such a wonderful bunch of people. Yay! Thank you!

I'm pretty amazed myself as to how quickly it is growing. I am so pleased that it seems so easy to make friends here and get to know each other better. People who were just names to me before are now suddenly more like friends. I really love that. And new people from all over are appearing- people with many varied mountain dulcimer musical tastes and styles, even from various countries. I also am sensing that this site makes it very easy for beginners to feel comfortable- YAY!Thank you and everyone here SO MUCH for making it a success! :D

I noticed that other folks like the walnut with western red cedar topped dulcimers that are mellower sounding and emphasize the bass string more. This seems to be more prevalent in California, maybe because of the guitar background?

It's really a combination of all these factors we've been discussing.I mean if you play a dulcimer like a guitar it will sound more guitar-like, but it will still sound like a dulcimer also. And likewise if you put a dinky skinhead on a dulcimer and play it like a banjo it will sound more banjo-like.....but you won't fool ME! LOL It'll still sound like a dulcimer too.By the way it's cuatro, not quatro. In one of my past lives I was a member of a traditional cuatro orchestra up in the mountains of Puerto Rico. (really)

I think the dulcimer more often sounds like a guitar when it's playing typical 1-3-5 modern Western chordal music (which most modern folk and pop music is) and using guitar-ish flatpicking technique. Once you get away from the full 1-3-5 chord progression & flatpicking sound and go back to open drone/mode based music while fretting only the melody string, it immediately sounds almost nothing like a guitar.In simplified terms- when you play a dulcimer like you play a guitar, it sounds more guitar like. ;)

Hi Teri,I split my time pretty evenly between banjo and mtn dulcimer. Even though I stick with all traditional music, I still like a little variety and hence the two instruments which I love.Learning new things is good. You should just do what you want! ;D

As a child I played cello in school, but never studied music seriously. Later as an adult I decided I wanted to play a stringed instrument again, and took up mandolin and attempted to play renaissance music. I played alone in my kitchen, was not very good at it, but it was enough to make me happy. After a while I had an urge to play music with other people, and began attending a local open folk music jam session with my mandolin. I had no particular direction in mind. At one session, a fellow pulled out a mountain dulcimer and began to play a folk song on it. I was floored. I had never seen or heard such a thing and fell instantly and completely in love with its sound. It was a life changing moment. When the jam was over he showed me how I could play a simple tune by just fretting the melody string and strumming with the other strings left open. WOW! I quickly got myself a dulcimer and some books, and began to teach myself to play. I think that was about 13 years ago.

Robin, I think it's great that your Mize will remain in its original condition when it goes to its next 'custodian'. You'll get another dulcimer that will be just right for you!

I can see both sides of the value/playability issues. But to me, I do tend to want to keep a dulcimer the way the builder intended it to be, and if it's not what I want then I would sell that dulcimer to someone who wants those features, and buy a dulcimer that has what I want....especially if it means I would not lose money in the long run. ;)But I certainly agree with Rod in saying any geared tuners you might put on that dulcimer really ought to be good quality planetary tuners. The planets will function better, you won't need fine tuners anymore, and they will jut out from the peghead at the same angle as the old wooden pegs- an important part of your dulcimer's personality.If you look at my Keith Young dulcimer in the logo on the top of every page here, you'll see "5 Star" brand planetary tuners. Great tuners, not cheap, but...when new, the plastic buttons on the ends were a hideous pearly glaring white- very fake-o plastic looking. I could not bear looking at them so I immediately painted them a nice old ivory color with oil based paint, then varnished that. They looked like ivoroid buttons then, matched the bone nut and bridge, and in the years since they've aged nicely, with just the right amount of grubbiness to look good and compliment the rich wood. Sort of 'shabby chic'. ;DIf you did change, be sure to KEEP the original pegs (even if the holes get enlarged in the process), and make sure you get planetary tuners for dulcimers, not for banjos. Different size.

Seeing a picture might help me make better informed suggestions.One thing I 'would' say is that if you get rid of the original wooden tuning pegs it will make it worth substantially less than it's worth now. Whether you should switch the tuners to make it playable for you is a personal choice, but you should know that it will devalue the dulcimer somewhat.For what it's worth- a decent luthier or violin repairman should be able to get the pegs working pretty smoothly. For some people that's not enough though.I'd love to see a photo of the dulcimer in any case- can you post one here?

Hi Dennis,I'm mostly clueless at recording myself. What I did figure out is that yes I could use my web cam to record myself talking or playing, but....i found out that if I use my little digital camera (you have to have one that will record a short video clip with sound), the quality is much better than the web cam with less blurring, and also, it records the clip in a file format that YouTube automatically accepts...something I was struggling with when recording from my webcam. I think most digital cameras these days can record short videos with sound.This abouts sums up everything i know on the subject! :D

When you add video or audio music clips to FOTMD from your profile page,
there are TWO criteria that must be met:
1) Please be sure they involve yourself playing some instrument, singing, or performing in some way, either solo or as part of a group. This policy keeps the site's focus on our own members' musical efforts! If you wish to direct people's attention to video and music clips of musicians other than yourself, then just give folks a LINK in a forum or group discussion post instead, where we can go look/listen for ourselves at the item online, rather than adding it to FOTMDs Video or Audio areas.

2) In our site's video or music sections, you may only add audio and video music material that is public domain or traditional, or if you are the songwriter. Please respect copyright laws and our site rules, by not posting songs or lyrics that are copyrighted by others. We are strict about this in order to protect our site from copyright infringement threats or lawsuits, and we try to support writers and composers rights. Not sure if that song is copyrighted? -here is our GROUP where you can ask if a song is public domain. 'Most' songs published before 1923 are now public domain, by the way.
Posting long excerpts of written material here that are copied from other people's books and articles is not allowed. Posting TAB arrangements of copyrighted songs is not allowed on FOTMD, whether it's your own tab or someone else's. Please do not post information here on how folks can obtain TABs of copyrighted songs from you- that makes FOTMD involved in the distribution of such material. Thanks for your cooperation! I should mention that just because you see a song posted on YouTube or other websites does not mean it is in the public domain and therefore is ok to post here. Many videos and other materials are in fact shared on those sites illegally.
Remember: All video or music files added to the sites video/audio sections via your profile page must include yourself playing or singing something, AND must consist of public domain (non-copyrighted) songs or your own composition. Videos promoting 3rd party sites, wares, or projects are not allowed.
SELLING/MERCHANDISING/PROMOTING:
The For Sale Forum - All members are welcome to use FOTMD's For Sale/Wanted Forum to sell, seek, or promote their music-related items. Listings in the For Sale forum must be for an actual currently existing item for sale (a CD or book, a specific single instrument , a music stand, photos of some specific dulcimer wood pieces for sale...) and the ad must include a PHOTO of the actual item being sold, and the price. In other words, no open-ended ongoing listings like "I make dulcimer stands", "I will make you a custom dulcimer", "I sell bowed psalteries", "Music lessons available", "Selling wood for building"... It needs to be the actual existing single item directly for sale, with the item's photo and price.
Please, no ads for Ebay or third party auctions. Seeking donations or funding for personal, charitable, or commercial reasons, or through links to sites such as Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, Patreon, or Crowdfunder projects, are not allowed. A maximum of TWO For Sale ads per member are allowed at any given time (but not for the same item), with no more than ONE instrument or large item per ad offered. Small items such as noters may be grouped up to five in an ad. To keep things current, an ad for an instrument will generally be deleted after about six months, while ads for non-instrument items and accessories such as CDs, books, jewelry, tote bags etc will be deleted after about four months. Please don't list the same item (such as a cd or tab book) repeatedly. If you would like to sell items more visibly or for a longer time period, please purchase a main page slideshow Showcase Ad, see below.
Listing an item for sale is free of charge, however- We do ask for a $5 site donation for any item or group of items listed in our For Sale forum once you have soldover $100 worth of item(s). If you sell a dulcimer for either $100 or $800, a simple $5 donation is asked. If you sell CDs or books or dulcimer straps totaling over $100 in sales, again only $5 is asked. To luthiers, teachers, pro musicians, etc- In your Profile Page Bio biography text box, you may provide ONE simple hot link to your commercial site, along with one or two photos and a simple one-paragraph description of what you do. Please don't promote your wares all over this site or turn your member profile page into a commercial marketing webpage for promoting what you sell. Don't use your profile page 'bio box' for placing ads or asking for funds. Keep in mind we are a social community , so don't use your membership here only for selling things or promoting your musical offerings. As part of this active dulcimer community you are also expected to regularly participate socially by interacting with and encouraging other members. We encourage members with interests in dulcimers or music.

We have two areas for members to post their special events. See the top bar links drop-down menu under Events to choose the appropriate location to post your event:
Individual musicians, performers, and teachers are encouraged to post notices of their tour appearances, workshops, club activities, monthly jams, gigs, concerts...by listing their individual Events such as workshops in our: Single Instructor Events Forum .
FOTMDs main Festivals/Gatherings Events section is intended for larger venues featuring multiple teachers or performers- such as music festivals, campouts, free gatherings, and music camps. Suzanne,I vividly remember several teachers i had in kindergarten and first grade who sang and played and taught us songs and simple folk dances. Each teacher had their own kind of music to share in a unique way. I think it had a wonderful and profound effect on me as a person, so I wanted to let you know that many of your students will never forget the music you share with them. You are teaching them so much more than just a song!

Walter, the bowed psaltery sounds so haunting and celestial as it is- I can only imagine how beautiful it must sound in a resonant church setting. It must produce goose bumps...

I remember that fear of messing others up too.My second favorite place to play is with several other friends and my husband at our town's local farmer's market. There is usually between 2 and 5 of us. Every other friday we volunteer to play there as our little way of giving back to our community. People love it, and sometimes we get some fresh organic vegetables or bread as a thank-you. I like that little toddlers often will start dancing to our music- unlike adults, they never feel too embarrassed to dance!

Do you have a certain favorite place or setting in which to play your dulcimer?In your kitchen? Bedroom? At the dulcimer club with others? At church? Under a tree?Tell us why you enjoy playing there the most.If i'm playing alone, I like to play upstairs in my office at home...it's my little world where I can close the door and I don't have to worry about how I sound when I'm trying to work something out, and all my music books and papers are here. Also, I can work out tabs while on my computer, with my dulcimer in my lap. Not very poetic sounding or sociable, I suppose... oh well! ;D
