Tunings you like to use on your dulcimer

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Now lol Robin I can't go that far.

I was surprised when I had mine taken off . It's Ebony and I can't even see where he did it. I have a old one that was so off that I had to have fret one and two moved. It was surprisingly on from 3 up but 1 and 2 was a good quarter of an Inch off. That one showed bad.

Tunings you like to use on your dulcimer

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Hi marg.  I play in CGC all the time. I did want to correct one little thing if you are going to be trying some of these.  My friend sings in Bflat so I tune to B flat -F - Bflat a lot.if you run to B it will have to be B-F#-B. One other tip. If you have been tuned to D for awhile your strings will be slack if you tune down. A new set will fix that. I tune one in D and one in C so I don't have to change often. A lot of the really old books were written in C. Understanding that DAD is not a tuning but rather a mixolydian tuning in the key of D makes it a little easier to understand.

What has music done for yor?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Sorry bout your mom but I know music helps. If you just look at David in the bible and the psalms. The musicians were held in very high esteem.I just saw a program where a guy is teaching guitar to our military now that have come home from war. Some had physical in jury's but the majority seemed to be suffering from PTS syndrome. All they interviewed were astounded at how much it had helped their mental outlook. It really is powerful.

Hi Bill, that's wonderful!! I took mine one time and was helping the lady do bingo. Not much interest but on women looked either very ill or very over medicated .afterward I started to play and noticed movement. That lady was up and inching her way down the table. I just kept playing and when sh got to me she pulled the chair as close up as she could get. And she too was smiling. I asked if she liked music and she nodded. I really was surprised and very moved at the power of music.

Thanks folkfan and Carrie!I just did a seminar with some senior med students on music and medicine. I did some extensive research again , as not to look dumb, lol) and found that in the last 10 yrs they have made huge strides with music as medicine. When they were able to see on scans for a fact how beneficial it is the drs have started to come on board. All current studies show that with music patients from infant to elderly healed faster, had less pain, had more reg heart beats and blood pressure, and left sooner. One dr said they had to face the fact that music is free, that there is no drug that will instantly lower the blood pressure and hold it like music, patients use less drugs and hospital stats are shorter all of which effects the bottom line. So nice to hear from someone who has tried it. The new studies on stroke and Parkinson's victims are amazing. Gabby Gifford chose to use all music therapy and has far surpassed what they thought possible. She recovered her speech very rapidly using singing and rhythmic patterns and regained the ability to walk much faster with music. It lightens the step like you said. I find this so fascinating and if I were younger id finish my degree and go into this field in second. But we can all help others by visiting hospitals, nursing homes and hospice. Playing fir sick or stressed friends. Even just singing with a stroke victim does wonders.Such power we all hold as musicians . We all hold a key to open someone's door.

Music

Music feeds my soul

and it truly melts my heart.

I knew music would be my life

From the very start.

I have played and taught for years,

All kinds of music in many of places

But the best part of my life

Is the smiles on my students faces.

I have a key in my possession

It opens up a door

To the wonderful world of music,

Where some have never been before.

I have a key in my possession

It opens the door to peace

Calms the sick and soothes the soul,

May music never cease!!

Hey Whit, I normally play it in Em. I tuned my baratone to FCF and capoed on 1 and played it. I have Martin Jazz strings on my baratone and it did just fine. You can play any DAD tab capoed on1with it tuned this way if your dulcimer will tune down that low. Its really Low. Could do the same thing ona bass as well. Probably too floppy on a standard dulcimer unless you use heavy strings. I use a 10/14/23 on my standard. I play in Bflat a lot there tuning to Bflat, F, Bflat and its pretty loose.

Hi there, all of what Nina said is great ad vice. One thing I will add is to take note of the fingers you are using. I use the ring finger and the thumb on the melody string. They work together thumb leading up and ring leading down. Using just one finger is choppy as is using a bunch of fingers . Send me your email and I will send you a video example of wildwood.

What about the McSpadden dulcimer cases that have the backpack straps. I use mine all the time and have some friends with cycles and they just put them on their back and go.

Thanks ken. That's what I thought too or DDDD ,I love that Galax tuning also thought about DADD with one of the bass strings being D and one an A. Ken Hulme said:
If there is no 6+ fret, I would tune DAA and play melody-drone or noter & drone style.

Thanks greg. Rod sent me thie articleand that is the exact one I got. Intonation was reAally bad. Asked Ralph lee smith about fixing it and he said that since it wasn't older than 50 yrs old it would be ok. I will keep it for playing traditional style. It is 4 equal string with the outer two strings on the bass side being bass strings. Don pedi said they often were on the older traditional dulcimers. Forgot to ask about the tuning. It came in a custom wooden box built in 76 and never touched. Got it for $50. What a find. Great craftsmanship, wonderful design and voice. It's at mcspaddens now trying to get it a little closer to right on intonation . Greg Gunner said:
Linda,

You may want to refer your friend to the following website. It has some background information on John Maxwell, including an estimate of the current value of one of his dulcimers.

What if they can help DAD...

OFF TOPIC discussions

There are tons of studies out now on music and healing and health. They have found that certain music can lower the blood pressure, lower the heart rate, change your mood, heal faster, recover faster, make babies and adults rest better, block pain and many other new applications. If your put in music therpy or music healing you will see hundreds of sites . Very interesting to me. I think God gave us this tool and we have no idea how powerful it is. Lots of hospitals are hiring stringed instrument players to assistat the bedside, recovery and even in surgery. They have surmised that the vibrations of the strings also play a part. Have a great day. LB Stephanie Stuckwisch said:
"Where harmony enhances health"!? Does that mean we're all going to live long lives? Or does it mean that those of us declared without talent will have surgeon general health warnings placed on our dulcimers?
