I also play at a senior care facility and yes, the dulcimer group I am with will not be visiting to sometime in the future. Not only our practices but also all our performances and Festivals coming up are cancelled.
I am disappointed but it is understandable
I thought I would play outside each evening, so my neighbors who are staying home would enjoy. Maybe many of us could fill the air with sweet sounds
Thanks Ken,
Yes, maybe wasn't noticed when action was higher but as it was lowered it became very noticeable.
I have taken care of the action on a number of my dulcimers among other repairs, but since this one needed a number of things checked over and it wasn't mine, (I was just finding a nice dulcimer for a new player) - well thought better then me working on it.
Good to know that the frets could have raised from the change of where or how it sat for the 30+ years, maybe I should be glad it was only 3 and not more. Even frets on my own dulcimers, I have file down but again looking like a new dulcimer and not mine - I just didn't want to.
All a journey in both playing the dulcimer and caring for it.
Thanks,
m.
There was a label but no model #. It was made in the 80's and may have had the same strings on it. I took it to get new strings (I could have done that but it needed to have the action lowered also) and be checked out. Turns out 3 frets needed to be adjusted (filed & reshaped) - so question - older dulcimers depending how or where they were stored for 30+ years, could that cause some frets to pop up a bit? As much as I checked it out, I didn't notice the frets till the action was lowered.
All in all, I still got it for a very fair price including the pricy repairs - but would have been a better deal without all the repairs. I have it tuned to DAA, it sounds so much sweeter then tuned DAd - for walnut I was surprise it sounded a bit bright or does older Folkcrafts tend to sound more bright then mellow?
The dulcimer & case looks basically new, not a scratch, chip or dent. It must of come home from the shop and made its way into the closet - and there it stayed. A treasure hiding but now it's out ;-)
Thanks for the info.
m.
Thanks John,
I have google Folkcraft teardrops and yes, you are right. I will contact the seller and go check it out.
it may have a label, I just haven't seen it yet, just the photo
looking at a dulcimer advertised with no info on who made
walnut teardrop, - made USA in the late 1980’s, - purchased in North Carolina.
tuning pegs, white & up - strum hollow curved but not large, pins up on end of fretboard - sound hole not crisp f.
Any ideas?
Ken, That is so special. Why do you think Thomas did his hearts up-side down or are they up-side down now? I think I had seen some of the photos from the Berea gathering, not sure if it was the first.
Ken,
it says, Thomas stopped making dulcimers 2 years before his death, so that is right at your date. Do you have a photo of this special dulcimer?
ken,
Right, I see Thomas died in 1933. I took the article as what they knew (thus far recovered)
It looks as if there were more instruments Mr. Thomas made but stopping before he died (Mr. Thomas made more than 1,500 instruments through his career until two years before his death in 1933). You are very fortune to have such a special piece of history and one of Ed Thomas last dulcimers before his stopping. His spirit lives on.
Nina,
Isn't dulcimer people wonderful, our members here, fellow dulcimer people we meet - even Dulcimer Legends like Homer Ledford. What a special memory you have of a special meeting.
ken
What a wonderful moment and now memory
I was looking up some history on some of the premier dulcimer makers (traditional Ky style dulcimers) and was wondering if anyone had stories to tell of someone they have meet, in their shop or at a Festival?
Warren May was good friends with Hormer Ledford and thinking some of our FOTMD members would have been around playing when some of these excellent craftsmen like Hormer, when they were still around. Share your stories.
Attached is the results of some info, I found looking up these masters (note: no quotes but taken from the online sites with their history) just passing on what I found - hope you find it interesting.
I tried the e-Bow at a guitar center yesterday with a non-amp dulcimer. I'm thinking it needs to be amp so the
E-Bow reads the electric magnate field. I could hardly hear the sound. Would be nice to have a violin tune for playing some songs
I have a Berg dulcimer
I may try the 10 on the d up by the bass D but I ended taking that string off since it seemed to either hit the bass or just not sound right. Berg's string gage attached:
Ever hear of an ebow, a bit more then half way through, Jerry Rockwell on the video. It's been around for years for guitars but i'm thinking of trying on a dulcimer.
What do you think?
ken
( fine tuners that will allow you to dial in a tuning once you're close with the pegs. )
where do we fine these and how do they work?
Dusty , I was just trying a tuning someone said they were using but I realize they didn't give me the right tuning and that is why my string kept breaking. Yes - right Strumelia, a standard size dulcimer just can't tune way up high - that was the problem
thanks
This is from a few years ago, I was just trying to hammer a tune. I wanted something other then strum strum with a pick. I am using a chopstick with a brass sleeve over the end I strike with.
I'm not sure how to tune to A-d-a, I checked the string gage and it had 13-10--07 but every time I try with a 07 string it breaks. Am I going to high and it should be all lower?
I have the bass string A like an A middle string, I have middle d like a d melody string, what tuning should the a now melody string be, very high a or i'm all wrong?
Sorry you don't live near me, I could just lend you a dulcimer till yours came in, unless you wanted to change the guitar around. Is there no one in your area?
good luck,
Found this site: shows the sears page - back click a few pages shows another sears page of instruments

Sears Dulcimer #1 These dulcimers were made in Korea.
I saw a uke under Sears Harmony
I have a (maybe) Hondo dulcimer sold by Sears for Christmas, has 'clover' sound holes. It needed some work but with the help of some great members years ago, I learned a lot about this dulcimer.
Every instrument is different, each one has their own personality .
Enjoy yours
I had a few players from our group over and we played at sunset, made for a beautiful evening - music and friends
I am hoping to get some players to come by but it's been so hot, may need to organize it for sunset. If there is a group, we should play several songs, any suggestions for a good porch or patio jam?
Nice interview, Dan is such a sweet fellow and has helped me on occasions.
360
and good going 10 years :-)
Steve,
Mark did reply, Randy Downing forwarded my info to him
thanks again,
Thanks Steve,
I had checked out Tindle's web site and tried contacting him. I wonder why there is no mention of any of his dulcimers he made? Do you have any idea about how many he made or what would be a fair price to ask for one?
Does anyone know anything about a tindle dulcimer, I can't find out anything on line. The group I play with just received one of his and I was hoping to find out some info.
Count me in on Playing On the Porch Day '18
I had a friend over and we played as the sun went down and the stars came out, north of Houston in Spring, TX
saras
custom designs, beautiful & so personal
How do I delete Folkcraft Cek-160 '85, it wont let me edit. When I try it says I don't have the proper privileges to perform. I created it, why wont it let me & isn't needed now.
What would be a fair price for a Folkcraft Cek-160 1985 - ebony fret board, scroll head, scallop fret board - weeping heart sound holes ?
ASAP please if you can
thanks
I have a ( Dulcimer Factory dulcimer ) and the action is very good, no problem with pressing a fret or hammer-on's or slides, etc.
If you think it is the action, easy fix. There are post I'm sure on here about lowering action or you could take it to a guitar shop if no dulcimer people are around to help.
Glad you found a way around the problem, enjoy your dulcimer adventure
Lets see if we can break last years total of players (I can play again this year) Lets set a world record of playing on the porch. Do we want to play anything or do we want to play a certain song or a set of tunes?
I did a search for 'Clemmer dulcimers' on here & a photo gallery popped up with the different members who posted their Clemmer dulcimers, not sure if they still have them or not but you could contact the members & ask them about theirs
I have hear they are well made & sound nice, like my Sam Carroll they have 5 strings & are fiddle shape.
Good luck with others who have one letting you know what they think.
