He, she or it?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

CB, what is this about 'another on the way', lol GF, tryin to catch up to Dana

ROFL Dusty, I have to agree w/the full figure woman comment! Goschi, I always refer to my dulcimers a she, her, "the ladies", etc. And like Dusty have named everyone of mine, tho no boys in the crowd as yet. Andi Waywego, Lily Langtree, and Mae West for starters, another on the way, will have to wait and see what she's like before naming her!

Banjo-tuned Dulcimer?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Thanks for the suggestions. The capo at the 3rd fret sounds like the easiest solution so I'll start with that.

Banjo-tuned Dulcimer?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

I recently finished an Andy Mackie Music Stick (like a Strumstick) and it's recommended tuning was gdG. It's fun to play and sounds like a banjo! The vsl is 22.25" and came with a 0.010" melody string. I tuned up to the g above middle c with my face turned away, thinking the string would break before getting up to g. It made it there, and I was wondering if I could tune my dulcimer up to g also. Not according to the string gauge calculator at http://www.strothers.com/string_choice.htm For my dulcimer with a 27.25 inch vsl it recommends 7 gauge string.

I currently have 0.010" (is that the gauge?) melody strings. Would they break if I tried to tune up to g from d?

The same calculator recommended a 9 gauge string for the Music Stick, so is that string even borderline OK?

The Power of Music

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Phil, great discussion title. Music has been VERY powerful in my life. When I finally hit bottom 8 years ago, God drew me up out of the pit through music and I finally put my trust in Jesus. I haven't played in a nursing home yet, but have seen how music affects children, sometimes calms them and sometimes winds them up

Mandolin with Dulcimers

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

I played 2 finger chords (sometimes the wrong chords) on mandolin in the vid below, in an informal jam with 6 dulci players, another mandolin on melody and a guitar on melody every other verse. It's kind of nice to switch out the lead melody player, not only the person but other instruments. 2 finger chords rock

Dusty, actually I couldn't decide which I like best, so here's Pay Me My Money Down from Bruce et al on the Conan O'Brien show. The only annoying part is when Jimmy Fallon just has to get in on it banging spoons off beat, some people just can't stand when other people are getting attention...

Here's yet another 'favorite' MD video I found recently on Youtube. I don't know anything about these people, so I also don't know the reason for the human skulls on their fireplace mantle, LOL. The women appear to be playing the chords an octave apart and the man is playing a melody line. Great rhythm!

I was just playing 'What A Friend We Have In Jesus' in tab that has both DAD and DAA tab, one right below the other. I was in DAA and just started playing it as if the upper line was my bass D. It made really nice chords that I didn't know of before, but then I figured out what I was playing on my bass D was actually the tab melody line for DAD tuning. So if tab comes in both DAD and DAA on top of each other, its like getting nice chords also! Just something I figured out today. A 'D' is a D the world round.

Favorite accessories to go with MD

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I agree with Strumelian and like to play with a strap holding the dulcimer on my lap. Here's a pic of the strap button I installed on my dulci. It does require drilling a small pilot hole so it is not for the faint of heart worried about their dulci

Yes, I just finished a 10-string Kantele from a Musicmaker's kit last month.
