Hi Scott, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. It's a good place to come, spend some time, learn about the dulcimer, and to meet some good people.
Thanks for all the welcomes! While my musical education has helped me greatly I'm a bit frustrated right now. I orginally started working with the 1-3-5 tuning - this is fantastic for using a MD as a "rhythm" instrument. You can easily add the correct chords - I have been amazed at what chords or chord inversions I can master with just 3 strings!
Then I found out about "noter" style - at first I didn't think much of it - but I preservered and it turns the MD into the perfect Medieval/Rennaissance or Folk instrument. Breathtaking in its beauty. I can hear the possibilities.
Obviously I will have to master both and get comfortable with retuning my MD on the fly. But my frustration comes because my musical knowledge is way ahead of my fingers. No help for it but to pratice.
This is I think part of the joy of the MD - it is simple enough to get some nice sounds out of it. But like all great instruments it waits for you to develop and the Art can come out.
Scott welcome to the site. I have played a lot of early music in the past, viol da gamba, lute, vihuela. I hope you post some clips of the music you're doing.
