Melanie, Perhaps what I write will encourage you. I got my first dulcimer in 1993. I "messed with it" off and on by myself for many years. No one in my area was teaching. I attempted audio cassettes, VCR tapes and DVD's over the years. I learned next to nothing. Then in fall of 2016 I found a group, albeit 56 miles away. Most of the group were relative newcomers to the mountain dulcimer. The group met weekly and I attended faithfully. The group was very tolerant of newbies and offered individual attention as needed. So 23 years after getting my dulcimer I was beginning to play simple songs like Twinkle Twinkle, Mary Had a Little Lamb and Bile them Cabbage. Now I am comfortable playing and enjoying it a lot. COVID prompted stopping meeting with group. I continue to play 5 days a week or more and am still learning.
I say all this to encourage you to persist. If you can find a group, check and see if you may fit in. Take things in small steps. I will give you a vote of confidence.

"The dulcimer sings a sweet song."
Hi Melanie, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. It's a good place to come, spend some time, learn about the dulcimer, and to meet some good people.
