Lady Athenry (Carolan, 1670-1738)

musician/member name: Music
Duration: 00:02:06
description:
Please look below for the presentation in English.
• Selon Donal O'Sullivan (Carolan - The Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper), cet air était dédié à Lady Mary Nugent, fille aînée de Thomas (4ème comte de Westmeath), épouse de Francis Bermingham, 21ème baron d'Athenry.

-------------- English

• Of this graceful air, the music collector George Petrie (c.1790–1866) said that it exhibited "a greater gravity of character and closer proximity to the sober dignity of Corelli's gigas than any other Carolan's composition of the same class".
• According to Donal O'Sullivan (Carolan - The Life, Times and Music of an Irish Harper), this tune was dedicated to Lady Mary Nugent, eldest daughter of Thomas (4th Earl of Westmeath), wife of Francis Bermingham, 21st Baron of Athenry. In Carolan's time, the Bermingham family resided in County Galway, at Athenry Castle (see photos in the video) and Bermingham Demesne, a few miles away from Tuam.

• The dulcimer (spruce/walnut) was manufactured in the Stoney End workshops at Red Wing (MN, USA) :

and was tuned C-G-c (1-5-8). The melody was played in C.
