Elizabeth MacDermott Roe - Carolan (1670-1738)

musician/member name: Music
Duration: 00:02:31
description:
(Please see below for the description in English).

Elizabeth was a granddaughter of Mrs. Mary MacDermott Roe, Carolan's friend and patron, particularly for his upbringing and training as a traveling harper, after smallpox left him blind at around the age of 16 or 18. The very old Gaelic family of MacDermott Roe (MacDiarmada Ruaidh) lived since 1607 at Alderford House, Parish of Kilronan, County Roscommon. She lived there from mining (iron) and working the forges, where Carolan's father, John, had been employed as a foreman since his family moved in 1684. The patronage of Carolan's work by the MacDermotts Roe was particularly important at a time when Gaelic culture was heavily suppressed by English measures (the so-called "Penal Laws").
• The collector Edward Bunting (1773-1843) gave two very similar versions of this tune, one under the incorrect title of "Plangsty Dodwell", the source of which he does not cite, and the other entitled "Betty Ini Diarmada Ruaidh" (Betty MacDermott Roe), learned from a singer.
• The arrangement for two dulcimers is largely inspired by that of Glenn Weiser for the solo guitar: "Celtic Harp Music of Carolan and others for the Solo Guitar (CenterStream Publications) :

• The few cello notes at the end are entirely my own.

So lilting and lovely. I too enjoyed the description, and the richness of the 'cello towards the end.
