Helen Seiler: Wow wow wow!! What a great band and SLIDE DULCIMER!! yay...so thats how its done. Are you willing to share with me your tuning for those numbers and are the strings set equidistant? I can hear that tuning is lower which makes entire sense cos i do know u need slacker tuning for good slide (not regular tuning like i did the other day)... and i see u have the slide on your middle finger.. do you use your ring finger to dampen strings at all... dont worry, I'll never be any where near as good as you (great right hand picking there) but being able to do more slide stuff would fit in well with our small local folk circle.
Hi Helen, thanks for your positive comments. It's s baritone dulcimer with three strings tuned AEEaa ( middle and melody strings are double coursed so there are five strings in all). The strings are at the usual kind of tension. The most important thing for slide playing in terms of set- up is that it helps if the action ( i.e. the height of strings above the fingerboard) is quite high so that the slide does not rattle on the frets. This does make it more difficult to play in the regular way, so I have this one MD set up specially for slide playing. At some point I may set up a smaller MD for slide playing.
And yes the slide is on my 2nd finger so that I can damp with my ring finger and also fret notes ( or harmonics) with my index finger.
Loved it
Nicely done!
Jane, so good to see you and the BYB again! I'm intrigued by your slide play-- way cool! Hope you & Q are well!
