I first heard the dulcimer played in 1981. I took my first dulcimer lesson around 1987 and have been at it ever since. It's an instrument that is easy to play but very challenging to master (I haven't come close to any sort of mastery of this instrument yet). I play mainly with a classical fingerpicking technique, but I enjoy all styles of dulcimer playing.

FOTMD is a wonderful place to learn and discuss this beautiful instrument! I'm so happy to be here.

I love your style of playing. I'm am now venturing into the finger picking technique. My dulcimer group only used the pick to strum or flat pick, so I'm kind of on my own with this technique.  I do have a question about the left hand chording etc... how hard do you press down on the strings? I'm thinking I am probably using too much pressure most of the time.

Thank you so much for your very kind comments.  Yes, the fretting is done with as little pressure as possible.  I only use enough pressure to avoid buzz and no more.  My action is set pretty low so that I can use light pressure, but that also requires that the fretting be done fairly accurately.

Harmonizing A Melody

I watch your video lesson but could respond on the group posting. I didn't understand much of it but did catch on to some, well done & thanks

You asked:

How do you get that split screen for your overdubs?

Guy,  That is done with PowerDirector video editing software. I record the first part, then listen to it on my laptop while I record the second part. I then import the two videos into PowerDirector and use the split screen feature to combine them. The trick is syncing the sound, which takes several tweaks.

Hey Guy,

Thanks for that ... Thought you'd say that ... Hmmm, that will take a lot of saving considering the state of the Aussie dollar at the moment ... and the fact that I'm an illustrator... I wonder what it is that Aeolous do ....

Anyway, please keep posting...

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Guy,

Hope all's well. I was hoping I could pick your brains, if you don't mind... I have a couple of dulcimers, and love them both for different types of music, but neither instrument sounds quite right for that Early Music genre, to me. I wondered what you recommend?

Cheers,

Anne

Hey Guy,

Love your playing. A friend recently sent me Randy Wilkinson's Elizabethan Music for dulcimer CD... Does anyone know if it's possible to get music or tablature for these gorgeous arrangements? I've been trawling the internet looking, but no luck with the book...

Cheers.

Hi Guy,

I got some wonderfulresponse from members. It puts me in the right direction. I really needed some guidance where to move with some new material formoving forward with learningfingerpicking skills.

I am going to make some time to listen to your playing. I will try your website as well. The musical genres you mention are all very appealing to me and I need to do some exploring.

Have a great day!

Stephanie

I'm honored nobel player of the Molly of the Ringlets. You have my attention. I just want to say that I feel a million miles away from the classical guitar life I lived. It's been a long illness, and I'm just in awe that I can sit in this chair and play ukes and dulcimer songs - such relaxing fun music after working like a dog at the classical all my life.

Yes, Ive been a fan of hers for a long time. Her left hand technique really makes sense, as a guitar player I was all over the place on dulcimer now I feel more in control and at ease when playing.

One can get very attached to them. They are very loyal, but as you know, can be very stubborn--sorta like some people I know (me!)!

We've had several and at my age, I've decided not to go thru the stress again, but still get tempted once in a while! Thank you for updating me on yours.

Thank you, Guy, for your friend request. Indeed my pleasure. We love Dachshunds, but probably won't get another since Max died. I have taken up MD playing and that provides me an avenue of peace. I have really enjoyed your playing and your comments regarding MD playing. You are an excellent resource for FOTMD. I look forward to hearing more of your excellent music.

Mike Clemmer did an excellent job on my Max Memorial!

Yes, thank you Guy. I think I found them on your page but did find them and have them. In class today I was fussed at for not strumming correctly, I do have a hard time understanding the sister sister's or up - up - down - up or what ever I should be doing.

Much to learn, so thank you for your help

Thank you, I may just need many more months of learning the basic but this will be good to go alone with everything else I'm trying to figure out.

Hi Guy, Thanks for becoming a friend of mine through FOTMD. I appreciate the musical knowledge that you bring to all of us at FOTMD. I notice on your personal web-site that you teach voice. I am curious if you do any singing on any of your videos? I am new to FoTMd and am not totally aware of what has been going on over the years.Smile.gif
