New Doug Berch Dulcimer :)

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

First it has been way to long since I have been on this site! Second, I love your Doug Berch Dulcimer. Could you give me a little information on how and why you choose his instrument? I am talking with Doug and maybe looking at one of his instruments with the same woods that are in your Dulcimer. I am looking for a sound that is mellow and rich and wondering if these woods provide that kind of sound?

Forming a Dulcimer Group -tips?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I recently started a new dulcimer club in Leesburg, Florida called the Celebration Dulcimer Club. We are dedicated to only playing Gospel Hymns with Christmas music thrown in. It took me almost a year to get the club up and going. Our main obstacle was finding a location for the club. After much searching we have a permanent home. The second issue was when to meet. I belong to two other regular clubs that meet on Saturdays so I did not want to do another Saturday club. We choose a day during the week. Since I still work I had to select that we would meet in the evening. We do once a month on the First Thursday of the Month from 6 pm to 8 pm. Since we are playing gospel hymns we started out by creating enough folders with a starter selection of gospel music that we have given to each member. As we progress we will add new hymns. We have a sign up sheet where they list their name and phone number and email address if they have it. We also set up a club facebook page as another way to keep in contact with our members. Our goal is to not only meet as a group monthly but to perform in public as opportunities arise. We are already set to give a Christmas performance the day after Thanksgving. We do a meet in greet at the beginning of our playing and play for about 1 1/2 hours, then we serve refreshments and have an opportunity for our members to mingle and talk about whatever is on their mind.

Dulcimers with internal pickups

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Can anyone suggest builders that include internal pickups in their dulcimers. I am looking for one that I can use when I perform in public and need to use with an amp. Right now I am looking at Modern Mountain Dulcimers but was wondering which other builders are internal pickups as well.

Thanks

Dennis

Crock Pot Beer Chicken

OFF TOPIC discussions

Somehow I came across a recipe for crock pot beer chicken today on the Internet. I copied the recipe and will be trying it out. Not very many ingredients but uses a ca of beer for the broth. Over some rice sounds like it will be delicious.

D-A-C tuning

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I went to a workshop on saturday where we tuned to D-A-C. We played Cluck Old Hen. Really enjoyed playing in this minor tuning. Looks Like I might try to learn more tunes in this tuning.

Stand for Modern Mountain Dulcimer

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Check with Lauri Cole who is a member on this forum. She has a wonderful guitar stand that fits any Mountain Dulcimer which should include the Modern Mountain Dulcimer. It is made mostly of wood and folds in or out depending on the size of the dulcimer that is being held. The price is pretty reasonable.

Lisa...Yes, they are in my garden. Those particular ones are only about 1 1/2 inches in diameter...so cute. I think bees would be a idea. I have an epi-pen, just in case, but I'm sure they will be well behaved! ~8-)

Strumela do you see who are now members?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

WOW 158 members. Your idea of a home for Mountain Dulcimer folk has blossomed and attracted some of the biggest names in the dulcimer world to become members. RF and BF are two of thw biggest. Can't wait to hear what they have to say on this forum.

Dulcimer or Guitar?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

When I first learn a song I usually play it only on the melody string without the chords. As I feel more comfortable with the music then I will go back and learn the chords. When I am in a jam if I do not feel comfortable (they are playing faster then I can play) then I will play just the melody string. As I continue jamming I will add the chords when and if I can.I enjoy the sound of the dulcimer with the drones but I also like to stretch the instrument by also learning to play the chords.

How did you first discover the mountain dulcimer?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I found the dulcimer through our long standing participation in 4H. We would always go to the fair with the 4Hers and every year there would be dulcimer players in a booth promoting the dulcimer. I would always wonder off and when the family could not find me they would look for the dulcimer people and yup that is where I would be. After many years of watching and listening I took the leap and bought a dulcimer. After buying I found a local group to play with. They ended up disbanding and pointed me in the direction of a group I have been playing with for several years. Two of the dulcimer players in this group also taught dulcimer so I ended up taking a beginning dulcimer class with them. I have now advanced to local jams and festivals. I find the dulcimer very rewarding and I have now converted my wife who is also playing the dulcimer!

Not being technically talented you will need to help with how to record yourself and how to upload here. Can I use my built in web camera on my computer to record myself?
