Strumming...AGAIN....

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Ken, I always love the way you think!  I'm not sure I explained well though...  At times my timing is off with my strumming.  Just in the middle of a song, sometimes more than once, out of the blue.  So crazy!

Lois, you are so right about singing and playing together.  Right now I have a song where I want to sing a word down three notes, but I find it impossible to keep strumming the melody while adding that little trill.  LOL!  I just shared in the noter thread that now I'm all about DAA with a noter, rather than where I was last year wanting to learn chords in DAD.  SO fickle!  LOL!  Thank you ever so much for your encouragement and for becoming a following friend.  sun

Thank you, Lisa!  ~great info~  Thank you, Ken!  Thank you, Richard!  Funny that I used to be all about wanting to learn to chord in DAD, but now I'm in a season where I'm all about DAA with a noter!  LOL!

Strumming...AGAIN....

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I have found that as time goes on (or I get older?) my strumming is less rhythmical!  Like I cannot keep time in the same way through an entire song without some crazy chops in there...  WHAT is THAT about?  LOL!  Please tell me I'm not the only one....

Kusani, THANK YOU!

Richard, THANK YOU!  I am absolutely IN LOVE with my Feather Dulcimer!  Here's a little vid of what she sounds like, if you're interested:

I am surprised that even for the idea of performing I have made this my main instrument.

Charles, thank you for your creative ideas!  I am especially intrigued by the cello tuning peg....

I have received noters!  That was FAST!  Dulcimer folks are the VERY BEST around!  They are beautiful.  Both friends sent me a couple of sizes, and it really blessed me to have some skinny ones for my little Wren/Feather dulcimer.  I love the sound and feel like the bamboo slides easier than other noters I've had/tried.  I'M SO HAPPY!!!  If I get a chance I'll record what we're working on, just go easy on your reviews.  giggle

Thank y'all.  I am truly over-the-moon!!!!!!

Ken, I love your ideas always.  I remember you sent me some woods, and I was so new I thought they were actual noters!  I still use them.  LOL!  Where does one get just a piece of bamboo?

I have found that my little Wren from Feather Dulcimer also sounds FANTASTIC in DAA!  I have lost my noter though and want to replace it ASAP.  I have gotten creative with household items, but I'd love your opinions on where to spend my dollars.  I'd also love your opinions on what sound you like...Wood?  Glass?  Something else?  TIA for sharing with me!

Are you playing on your porch today? -Aug 26, 2017

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Lisa, you're going to have a great Saturday out there with your instrument(s)!

I was hoping to get a line-up by time on my porch, but I haven't.  I'm just putting out a call to anyone who might come now.  We live in the city and plan to put a table out on the sidewalk with some sweet tea and cups, a homemade sign, and an extra chair or two.  Our porch is smallish, but we are excited for whatever happens!  ~even if it's just us~

Love your update!  I wanna get in on those alfalfa sprouts...  My grape vine is looking good, but I think it will need another year before it produces.  We have blueberries on the bush that the birds always get before we do.  No blackberries yet, *I think*, and it will take another year or two before my hazelnuts produce.  We did make the front prettier and have plans for the back, so that we can live outside more. (Upcycled picnic table, seating, etc.)  I actually pulled up my square, raised beds for veggies, as we need to buy dirt, and it's gotten late again this year.  :(  I'm regrowing a cabbage my windowsill~does that count?

I was given a little $ gift and did just order Sara Ivanhoe's 20-Minute Yoga Makeover.  I was sick for so long that we got out of the habit of our nightly walk and need to pick it back up again.  My littlest and last is weaned, which is bittersweet but opens up a new world for me.  OH!  ~and I've fallen in love with the chickpea~

Your "Dream Dulcimer?

What's hard is that it changes from season-to-season.  I remember wanting a Yocky, I remember wanting a big 'ole Tennessee Music Box, I remember wanting a Schnaufer 6-string, I remember wanting a double back...  Now I am just so happy with my little Feather Dulcimer (a Wren), Teagan, that I feel complete.  At least for a while, anyway....

What's your Favorite Finger Board length?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I'm not sure if this is but so helpful, because this is vastly smaller in size than what you're asking, but I have fallen in love with my 17" Feather Dulcimer.  I loved playing my Walnut Creek, too, but there were songs I never could get that I seem to just play out of the blue now.  That makes me think a 26.5" (and I see you added 25") might be beneficial to some.

A 'beginner dulcimer'

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I don't know nearly as much as the others here, but my opinion is that sometimes beginners are not ready to commit to paying a lot.  Some who are more professional and perform a lot tend to get/need higher end dulcimers for concert settings and better quality sound from what I've read, though I've not experienced what that means.  I don't see myself there, so for whatever I perform (church) mine are just fine!

Younger Next Year truly has changed my life, so now I've moved onto Thinner This Year.  I'm also reading 'Tis a Gift to be Simple and am enjoying it, though I wish more were written on the subject by people living in poverty.  There's a whole idea to this concerning judgment and acceptance I don't know how to explain...  Lastly, I'm reading the third of a multicultural fantasy series (The Dragon Songs Saga) by my acupuncturist, Dances of Deception.  I've never liked fantasy, but I have trouble putting these down once I've started!
