That's a wonderful arrangement, and a wonderful instrument as well!

I became the custodian of a James Edward Thomas dulcimer with the stipulation that I take it to festivals and allow people to play it. The story is told elsewhere of its restoration to be able to do that. When it passes from my hands it goes with the same stipulation; that it be available to be played by anyone who would like to try an original Thomas dulcimer. If that stipulation is not agreed to, it will remain with my heirs until they find someone who can do what the original owner of the dulcimer stipulated for his instrument.

It's good to hear that it will be appreciated. It's a shame, though, that Steve wasnt able to find it a home where it will get to be played. It was a very thoughtful sentiment.

Glad to hear that you made it out safely and the other dulcimer survived. I am very familiar with the collection in Hindman, both before and after the flood. I gave them a reproduction of a Charles N. Pritchard dulcimer that I made.

@steve-cobb It's so good you are okay and your cabin and other mountain dulcimer in it are "just fine"!

Yep. A lot of their collection was destroyed in the flash flood of a few years ago. When I visited, I saw the aftermath of the destruction, and thought it could never happen to me. But it did—I have a cabin near Lake Lure, NC, and was there when the hurricane hit earlier this month. Had to be helicoptered out! The infrastructure (roads, bridges, power poles) is totally destroyed. Thankfully, my cabin—and my other Arthur Dixon dulcimer that’s in it—are just fine.

Glad to hear that this dulcimer found a home in Hindman. It will be a great addition to the dulcimer museum there where people will be able to see the craftsmanship of Judge Arthur Dixon.

@nate Hindman is a really neat little place-- I was lucky to get to visit in '15.  Hearts of the dulcimers beat strongly there.

Did you find this a home?

Many years ago, my father (who was in the wood business) supplied veneer to Judge Authur Dixon of Whitesburg, KY. When I was a little boy, Judge Dixon made a dulcimer for me, with my name and the date on a small piece of paper glued to the inside. I rarely play it, but I treasure it, and keep it on display in my mountain cabin.

But I have another Arthur Dixon dulcimer for which I want to find a good home. It’s dated January 24, 1964, and is number 85. It belonged to my father, who passed away several years ago. It has been dropped, so it needs repair. I don’t know what it’s worth, and I really don’t care. I just want someone to have it who will repair it and play it. Please contact me if you’re interested.
