Thank you, Wilfried! I had read about the "hook" in Praetorius' description, but I think it is this post that let me first notice the hook in the illustration!

Many people are confused about Praetorius Scheitholt when they get a wrong translation from German like this:One of the unison strings was pressed on to the finger-board by a little metal hook halfway (?) down, so that its pitch was raised a fifth.The middle string of three unisono tuned strings should get the hook. Look at this fairly good copy of the Scheitholt. You can see the hook behind the 4th fret under the second string!
