Funny, when I was writing my comment about one of my dulcimers being a tomboy, I had a weird feeling of dja-vue. Now I know why; check out this discussion that I started one late night and subsequently forgot about: http://mountaindulcimer.ning.com/forum/topics/dulcimer-gender-studies .

I believe I got a Mcspadden Sweet Song?
Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions
yes mine measures the same.....had some dry finish section so I hit it with a touch of Watco walnut dark over the dry bits ...mine had missing strings ....did yours have the sticker inside of who put it together ,,,,,I've been busy slowly convert a old small guitar case for it .....

Mine has, to me, a great sound. It is a lage instrument, 29 1/2 inch VSL, and a 2 1/2 inch deep box. I have posted in another forum here about the strings. It was missing the #1 melody, and I replaced with a .012, but the other two are smaller, and appear oxidized. But I like the sound. #2 has a ring to it, and I cannot imagine why. I have read here that the longer VSL can create a problem because of the longer frets, but I do not believe it will hurt Twinkle Twinkle Little Star a bit.

I know this thread has gone quiet, but thought I'd chime in late. I mark my fretboards with a 1/4" punch from a medium weight guitar pick. They come in lots of colors and you make the punch with the old office hole puncher you have laying around. The newer punchers are often made of softer metal and can easily be bent out of shape.
I drill the 1/4" hole in the fingerboard with a Forstner bit so it is nice and flat on the bottom. A drop of gel super glue holds in in place. I use a credit card or a business card to tap it flush with the surface of the fingerboard. Do not use your fingers, you'll never get it in straight and even that way.
This is an admittedly down-scale material, but my instruments are made from discarded tobacco containers, so they match, aesthetically and price-wise.
