Paul Pyle is certainly part of dulcimer history, if only for his dulcimer books.

  • How to Tune and Play the Dulcimer (1973).
  • To Build a Dulcimer: A Simplified, Economical Demonstration in the Construction, Tuning and Playing of the Dulcimer (1976).  (self published, 14 pages)
  • The Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer Book (1976).

His wife said they made about 1600 dulcimers. Most were sold at craft fairs, not to established dulcimer players, so it isn't surprising that they end up at GoodWill.

He used a variety of tuner methods, several of which are considered undesirable by modern players.

They are primarily of regional interest around  in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

No forum or group like that here, that I know of.  I think it's up to individuals to rescue such dulcimers.

Yep, yet another Paul Pyle dulcimer on ShopGoodwill (search “dulcimer” - the site’s search feature is very basic).

Putting this here in the hope that one of you legacy-minded folk might make it sing again!

I wonder if in the vein of “animal adoption/rescue,” there is a “dulcimer adoption/rescue” forum here for legacy instruments that are likely to become wall hangers unless someone conserves/restores them? I did not see one but might have missed it.
