Robin's right.  I just checked the list of your 'Followers', Paula, and Dewey is not among them.  He needs to approve your follow request in order for the two of you to exchange private messages.

Paula, please double-check to be sure you & Dewey are following each other.  (I just did a little test and Dewey's name came up for me when typing in the Recipient name box.)

Steve Battarbee:
Ive tried every combinations of their tag?/name ie @their-name I keep getting an 'invlaid' message

Dusty outlined the method well.  nod

One little detail though- if you are typing in "@" or hyphens when typing in their name, you should not do that-  just start typing their user name without a @.  Don't put hyphens in either.  For example, for Dusty Turtle, I'd just start typing Dusty...and he would pop up as one of the choices of members who have "Dusty" in their profile name...and I could select him probably before I even get to the "ty" of Dusty.  I would not start typing @dusty-turtle, I'd start typing Dusty.

Steve, in order to send a private message, first hover your cursor over your name in the upper right-hand corner and choose "Private Messages" from the drop-down menu.

Then choose "New Message."

When you get the message box, put the beginning or part of the person's username in the search box, and all the members that have those same characters will show up in a drop-down menu.  Click on the name of the person you want to contact.

Once the recipient's name has been automatically loaded into the recipient field, you can go ahead and 1) give a name or title to your message; 2) add the actual text of the message; and 3) click "send.

I hope that helps.

I have found where to access the Private Messages but although we are 'mutual followers' and Ive tried every combinations of their tag?/name ie @their-name I keep getting an 'invlaid' message

Is there an issue or is it just me doing it wrong?

Thanks

Thanks Robin!

When learning our way around this new platform, it helps to keep this in mind:

On the OLD site, we added videos and music from the video or music area or from the main page.  Now we add those things from our own profile area- we go to our "Video" TAB on our profile page and click the PLUS+ button to add our own video...which is then seen in the main videos section.

Likewise, we used to go to another person's profile page and look for 'send message' button to message them.  Now we send all messages from our own profile area's Private Messages area.

Content that belongs to us or that we ourselves create or add to the site are often added/controlled from our own profile page areas now.

To send a PM:

As Robin said, Hover on your top navbar NAME LINK, and the drop-dpown menu will show "Private Messages"-  click to get to your Message area.

There you can see past message threads you may have sent or received.  To create a NEW pm, look there top right for "New Message" button.  go there and start typing a name, like John...and all members with John will show in a list as you type (autofill) and you pick which John you want to send it to. and you type your PM and then send.

Make sure you look in your "Notifications TAB" in your Account Settings area, to checkbox the things you would like to receive email notifications on...like be notified when you receive a private message, for example.

Though at first this all feels too different and unfamiliar, once we do these things a few times it starts to feel more normal...it happened to me. nod

Hope this helps!

Hi, Sheila!

Click on your own name at the upper right side of the page-- your name is next to the magnifying glass search icon.  In the pulldown menu under your name, you will find a link for sending private messages.

Hope this helps!

How do you post a private message, I am following a person and they are following me.  I click on their page but where do I go to post a PM please?

Yes, the 'follow' has to be done both ways for there to be a private message connection enabled.  This is to make sure you only get private messages from those you choose to.

You can leave a little comment on their comment wall of their profile page- I don't believe that will show up on the main page anyway, or in a 'forum'.

After a few more days, i believe people will begin to notice people in their 'followers' list and they can look through them and follow them back if they like.  As soon as folks begin to get the hang of things here, all this wont seem so new and strange anymore.  See,?- you are already posting here! nod

When you 'follow' someone, it's like leaving them your calling/contact card... they can then follow- give you their card too...and then you both can message each other.

I used to private message with a few folks and now I cannot do it any more.  How do I get back onto their "list"? I already clicked on "follow".  Do they have to "follow" me back?  If so, how do I ask them to do that without posting it on an open forum?  Thanks for your help, Strumelia.  It will take some time to get used to the new format.
