Nigel Pennick plays his tune 'St Edmunds' on mountain dulcimers. Accompanied by pictures of the legend of St Edmund, king of East Anglia ritually executed by Danish invaders. His head was cut off and later discovered by his followers guarded by a wolf. The wolf is memorialised in a carving at Old Hunstanton, Norfolk and in a carving of wolf and head in St Edmundsbury Cathedral in the Holy City of Bury St Edmunds. The talismanic head of St Edmund was stolen by French invaders in the thirteenth century and is now in France. The shrine of the king, a place of pilgrimage and healing, along with the shrine of St Petronella there, was destroyed by the Protestant Reformation. But images of the head of St Edmund can be seen in various places in the holy city.
Enjoyed this so much, Nigel! Thank you for adding the background story also.
