Fare Thee Well -- NKYunplugged

musician/member name:
Duration: 00:03:59
description:
The last song of the night at Northern Kentucky Unplugged. This was used in the movie Inside Llewyn Davis, but is public domain from 1908. My camera doesn't do the sound justice. It was a lot better in person. That's me on harmonica. I only heard the song for the first time the day before, and could have been worse. Our Dobro player Bud Walls did his usual great job. Hang around for Jeffee Kiser's guitar solo starting around 2:36.

A Marimbula! I want one! Apparently they can be tuned very precisely so you could play in any key. Wow! Obviously you can't do really intricate bass runs or anything, but basic alternating bass patterns would be pretty easy on one. I want one . . . I want one . . . I want one . . .

Thanks, everybody!

The bass instrument is a marimbula . The tuning is such that if you are on the I chord (D in this case) the IV and V, G and A, are on either side. It's just like a circle of fifths. Watch his hands and you'll see that he's staying in one place. A kalimba is much more difficult to play.

cool! very nicely done! all the lead breaks were top notch. I'm curious about the bass instument there. looks like a stand up bass kalimba. never seen one before and has piqued my interest. thanks.

Love that bass kalimba! I've never seen anything like that! And your playing is really good, too, Tom. I've played a bit of harp myself but never felt that comfortable with the really high notes the way you do at the beginning of your solo.

This is pretty good, especially considering there is no dulcimer.Smile.gif
