This is in C G C tuning, played using Bm chord forms, which makes it Am. Yesterday, a friend's son was wanted to try out my dulcimer. I couldn't find a lot in common musically with a 19 year old, but he understood music and we both knew this song. I pulled up the chords on the computer, wrote out the fingerings for each, and had him playing in about 20 minutes.
Try this link for the chords. Use the "transpose" button at the top of the page and go up two half-steps from Am to Bm. Then retune from DAD to CGC, so your Bm chord fingerings are really back in Am. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/e/everly_brothers/house_of_the_rising_sun_crd.htm This is sometimes played in Em, too. To get meet your guitar player there, transpose down 5 half-steps, and stay in DAD.
well, the formatting dropped off on those chords. I'll leave it for now, and find a better way to do it tomorrow.
Thanks, Sue! Here you go. (I hope the formatting works ok on this. If not, I'll figure out something else). Also, I've got more info about this song, and another version, here: http://mountaindulcimer.ning.com/group/callthetune/forum/topics/house-of-the-rising-sun# I play F# instead of F#7.House of the Rising SunBm D E GThere is a house in New Orleans theyBm D F#7call the Rising Sun and itsBm D E Gbeen the ruin of many poor girl, andBm F# Bm D E Gme, oh God, for one.Bm D E GIf I had listened to what my mother said,Bm D F#7I'd have been at home to day,Bm D E GBut I was young and foolish, oh God,Bm F# Bm D E GLet a rambler lead me astray.Bm D E GGo tell my baby sister,Bm D F#7Don't do what I have doneBm D E GBut shun that house in New Orl eansBm F# Bm D E GThey call the Rising SunBm D E GI'm goin' back to New Or leansBm D F#7My race is almost run,Bm D E GI'm goin' back to spend my lifeBm F# Bm D E G Bm F# BmBeneath that Rising Sun
This I like ! post the Chords for me Tom
Sounds good and you're all ready for Christmas carols with the 19 year old too. Somebody recorded "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" to this melody a few years ago and it sounds pretty good.Give it a try--it really gives it a fresh sound. :)
I had visions of making a dulcimer kit with my grandson. From when he was about three til about when he turned six, we would play together, he strumming a beat while I did the left hand. As a sophisticated guitar playing eight year old, he says the dulcimer is pretty boring. So, I feel your pain.I'll admit to a mild obsession with this song, to the point purchasing the book "Chasing the Rising Sun -- The Journey of an American Song" by Ted Anthony and then teaching a whole dulcimer seminar on its history and the various ways to play it.What fret do you start on to play this in noter-drone? and what tuning? Does it come out in minor key, or closer to the early major-key versions, such as from leadbelly?
Tom, just watched your 'House of the Rising Sun' While watching it my grandson came into the room and said " Oh, I know that; why don't you play properly like he does"? I should say that I play noter and drone dulcimer, and I Do play that tune. Just thought I would share that with you! Regards, JohnH
