What are you getting? Is it a McSpadden, or something else? I would love to eventually get on by Gary Galleir, but he is not even opening his waiting list..I'm on the waiting list for the waiting list! LOL
Yes, that looks the same as mine. I didn't realize they only had made a few of them...I purchased mine from The Dulcimer Shoppe, directly off of the McSpadden web site. The lady I spoke with did say it was unusual. I actually picked it first from sight after she sent pics, but then she played 4 different instruments for me over the phone (which is not ideal) without telling me which was which so I could just pick by the tone alone, and this is the one I picked, which made me happy, as it was really the one I like the looks of the best as well. I think I will call and ask her more about it, just so I know, since you all mentioned they made only a few. I wonder why they would only make a few? I hope the wood is not bad or something! Maybe it is just more popular to go with the more well known woods, and it was more expensive than the other models, much to my dismay! Yikes! But it was the one I liked the sound of, so it's the one that came home .......Thanks for passing the info on about this model!
Spalted wood's beauty is caused by it being "infected" by a fungus that penetrates the pores and causes all sorts of color changes and streaking. Common spalted woods are Mango, Sycamore, Maple and Chestnut, but any wood can be infected under the right conditions. By the time you get the wood as a builder, the fungus is dead, of course.
Thanks...the wood is called spalted Sycamore...I thought it was really interesting wood. It isn't bookmatched, but I kind of liked the free-flowing pattern it makes. I was thinking about an all walnut dulcimer, but this one just seemed to call to me, and I liked the sound (over the phone it's really hard to tell!) better than the all walnut or all cherry that I was able to hear...I think I made a good choice! My friend who is a singer and has a tendency to react to things by singing different songs said when she saw the picture of it she started singing "MY Funny Valentine", so maybe that's her name, Valentina...hahaha
