The song is early 18th century, at the time of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-11). Jon Tams' version was in the series Sharpe, set 100 years later in the Peninsular War in Spain. Of course it was Queen Anne who was commanding in the early 1700s.
Any idea of it's origins at all ? I've always known it as 'Tom he was a Piper's Son' from when I was a kid, and only recently came upon it again with the John Tam's version.
