SINGING IT: on Good Friday, I could not leave this song alone. At the YouTube address below, I take a shot at singing with the dulcimer playing a harmony accompaniment. To help with those bottom notes, I tuned up just slightly from D (but not all the way to E flat).

Dick,

Thanks so much for your kind comments. The encouragement goes both ways. By all means, play that thing! But be warned: once this instrument starts to speak to you, it may never shut up!

I'll send you a friend request, so I can better follow your progress. Keep me informed.

William, a very enjoyable performance of a lovely song. I must admit that I find your performance very encouraging to this 72 year old newcomer to the Dulcimer. I have been agonizing over whether to take the time to try and learn how to play this wonderful instrument. I must say that after listening to your presentation that I am inclined to make the effort. You have clearly shown me the beautiful sounds of that wonderful instrument and have helped me with my decision. For that I than you very much.

Patty, I play dulcimer occasionally on Sunday mornings, though I do far more guitar and piano. Every once in a while, a song we're doing just calls out for a dulcimer.

I got started on the dulcimer sitting at the feet (literally!) of Rich Mullins one evening in April 1991 in New Orleans. Rich was one of the giants of contemporary Christian music, a virtuoso pianist and hammered dulcimer player, and pretty fair on the lap dulcimer. He died in September 1997. For several years now, I have planned an all-Rich music Sunday for the Sunday closest to the day of his death, and my dulcimer (even made by the same craftsman who made Rich's first and last dulcimers) figures prominently in the plan.

While it gets limited morning use, my dulcimer sees more use for 5th Sunday evening "sangin's" and nursing home ministry; and some friends and I even played at a recent funeral for one of the great ladies of our local historical society.
